An apparatus for developing an electrostatic latent image in a liquid developing material-based electrostatographic printing machine including a control system for controlling an amount of marking particles, carrier liquid and/or charge director added to a supply of liquid developing material utilized for developing a latent electrostatic image such that the concentration of marking particles and or charge director can be maintained at an optimal value. The amount of marking particles, carrier liquid and/or charge director in a supply of liquid developing material is maintained at a predetermined optimal value in response to the amount of marking particles and/or charge director depleted from the supply of liquid developing material with each development cycle. A supply reservoir is maintained with a substantially constant amount of liquid carrier to which is added marking particles and/or charge director to provide an operative solution of liquid developing material. For each development cycle, the amount of marking particles and/or charge director depleted from the supply of liquid developing material is determined as a function of the number of picture elements or pixels making up the image being developed. Marking particles and/or charge director concentrate are added to the supply reservoir to maintain the amount of marking particles and/or charge director in the operative solution of liquid developing material at a predetermined value by effectively supplying the marking particles and/or charge director lost by the transport of liquid developing material to the copy substrate.

A system and method for color mixing management in an electrostatographic printing system, wherein a developing material reservoir containing an operative solution of colored developing material including a mixture of selected color components is continuously replenished with selected differently colored developing material concentrates in a predetermined ratio so as to be capable of producing a customer selectable color image area on an output substrate. The present invention may also be utilized to mix a customer selectable color in situ, either from stored proportions known to compensate for developability differences or from approximate amounts of primary color components initially deposited and mixed in the developing material reservoir with the resultant operative developing material mixture continually developed and replenished with a predetermined ratio of color components until the developing material mixture reaches a steady state color.

A color printer having a photoconductive belt and employing liquid developer. A latent image is recorded on the photoconductive belt corresponding to the subtractive color of one of the colors of the appropriately colored toner particles at a first development station. An image conditioning system condition the developed image by reducing fluid content while inhibiting the departure of toner particles therefrom thereby increasing solids content of the developed image on the photoconductive belt. The photoconductive surface with the developed image thereon is recharged and re-exposed to record the latent image thereon corresponding to the subtractive primary of another color of the original. This latent image is developed with appropriately colored toner and conditioned. This process is repeated until all the different color toner layers are deposited in superimposed registration with one another on the photoconductive surface. The multi-layered toner image is transferred from the photoconductive surface to an intermediate belt for further conditioning and thereafter is transferred to a copy sheet.

System for replenishing liquid developer in equipment, such as a printer, whereby the percent of toner solids is maintained at about 0.5 to 4% by weight based on the total weight of liquid developer, the system comprising at least one liquid toner concentrate vessel containing aggregates of thermoplastic resin particles, median particle size (volume weighted) greater than 15 .mu.m, and with 90% of the particles (volume weighted) not less than 30 .mu.m, composed of 50 to 100% by weight of particles and 0 to 50% by weight carrier liquid; a liquid vessel containing carrier liquid, means communicating each of said vessels with a dispersing vessel containing high shearing or high impact means wherein contents of the liquid toner concentrate vessel and the liquid vessel are supplied thereto and the resin particles are dispersed in the carrier liquid to form particles having a median particle size (volume weighted) of less than 15 .mu.m, and with 90% of the particles (volume weighted) less than 30 .mu.m in an amount of about 0.5 to 20% by weight of resin particles and about 99.5 to 80% by weight carrier liquid said dispersion being supplied and metered into the supply vessel containing original liquid developer to maintain the desired weight of solids. The system is useful in copying, proofing, etc., equipment, and the liquid developer is useful for making copies, proofs, lithographic printing plates and resists.
