The channel spreading device includes; a storage medium for storing orthogonal code numbers which cannot maintain an orthogonality when an orthogonal code for a maximum data rate is used; a controller for determining whether the respective orthogonal code numbers stored in the storage medium are available at a given data rate, when at least one data user requests data transmission at the given data rate, and outputting the determined available orthogonal code numbers and control signals according to the determination result; a plurality of channel transmitters, provided in association with the orthogonal code numbers from the controller, for spreading data from the data user with an orthogonal code corresponding to the orthogonal code number from the controller; and a plurality of multipliers for multiplying outputs of the channel transmitters by control signals from the controller, a plurality of channel transmission circuits; a storage medium for storing orthogonal code numbers which cannot maintain an orthogonality when an orthogonal code for a maximum data rate is used; a controller for determining whether the respective orthogonal code numbers stored in the storage medium are available at a given data rate, when at least one data user requests data transmission at the given data rate, and outputting the determined available orthogonal code numbers and control signals according to the determination result.

A scrambling code generating apparatus of a downlink transmitter in a UMTS mobile communication system, which uses one primary scrambling code for separation of base stations and multiple secondary scrambling codes for channel separation. The apparatus includes a first m-sequence generator for generating a first m-sequence and a second m-sequence generator for generating a second m-sequence. A first summer adds the first and second m-sequences to generate the primary scrambling code. A plurality of first masking sections each shift the first m-sequence, and a plurality of second masking sections corresponding to the respective first masking sections each shifts the second m-sequence. A plurality of second summers each adds one of the first shifted m-sequences with the second m-sequence corresponding to the first m-sequence. The output of the second summers thus generates the multiple secondary scrambling codes.

A demodulation method in a mobile station having a plurality of channels, for receiving a signal from a base station. In one aspect, the base station has a plurality of channels, a BPSK spreader for orthogonally spreading symbol data of each channel with an assigned orthogonal code, and a QPSK spreader for PN-spreading the orthogonally spread signal with a PN code. In the demodulation method, a first QPSK despreader in the mobile station receives PN-spread signal and PN-despreads the PN-spread signal with the PN code, and a second QPSK despreader orthogonally despreads the PN-despread signal with a complex orthogonal code having the real and imaginary parts of the assigned orthogonal code. In another aspect, the base station has a plurality of channels, a QPSK spreader for spreading symbol data of each channel by the real and imaginary parts of its assigned orthogonal code, and a QPSK spreader for PN-spreading the orthogonally spread signal with a PN code. In the demodulation method, a mobile station receives the PN-spread signal from the base station, PN-despreads the received signal with a PN code by a QPSK despreader, and orthogonally despreads the PN-despread signal with the assigned orthogonal code by a BPSK despreader. In both aspects, during the orthogonal despreading, the complex conjugate of the estimated pilot channel value is multiplied by the orthogonally despread signal, for compensation.

A method for transmitting a power control signal in a mobile communication system. By altering the power control subchannel, the method reduces the delay between power measurement and power control by one power control group (PCG) in comparison with the conventional method. The power control subchannel is moved within the power control group so that a time equal to generating the power control bit is before the power control bit and a time equal to the sum of the round-trip propagation delay between base station and mobile unit and the time needed to perform gain control is after the power control bit.
