A laser ignition apparatus includes a laser oscillator which generates at least two successive pulse-shaped laser beams during each compression stroke of the engine. A first pulse-shaped laser beam is generated by a Q switching action of the laser oscillator and thus has a high peak output and a second pulse-shaped laser beam is generated without the Q switching action and has a low peak output but a larger pulse duration than the first laser beam. The first and second pulse-shaped laser beams are guided and directed into the combustion chamber of the engine and the first laser beam of a high energy density causes the breakdown of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber to develop a plasma and the second laser beam further increases the energy of the plasma thereby to ensure the setting fire of the air-fuel mixture.

The point at which the crankshaft reaches a predetermined angular position and the point at which a capacitor which starts charging in relation to another angular position of the crankshaft discharges the voltage thereacross to a predetermined value are initially set. Of these two points, that which occurs earlier than the other is selected as the desired ignition point or timing and in this way constant and stable ignition timing is provided at the lower engine rotational speeds, while the ignition timing at the higher engine rotational speeds is adjusted with a high degree of accuracy, thereby providing on the whole the satisfactory ignition timing which follows up or response excellently to changes in the engine rotational speed.

The vibrating reeds have different lengths, shapes or thicknesses, and the other end of the vibrating sheet is fixed to a supporting member which is secured to the engine thereby to allow the vibrating reeds to vibrate with different resonance characteristics in response to the vibration of the engine caused by the knocking. The vibration of the vibrating sheet is detected, for example, as a change in reluctance by forming a magnetic path through the vibrating sheet and air gaps respectively located between the free ends of the vibrating reeds and a core.

The free end of the vibrating reed confronts with the other end of the core with an air gap therebetween to form a magnetic path including the magnet, vibrating reed, air gap and core. As the vibrating reed vibrates in response to vibration of the engine on which the supporting member is securely mounted, the distance of the air gap changes causing a change in magnetic flux passing through the magnetic path. The change of magnetic flux is detected by a coil wound on the core. The resonance characteristic of the vibrating reed is arranged to fall in the frequency range of the knocking.

The advance/retard angle value for the ignition timing corresponding to the detected engine condition is separately determined in accordance with the corresponding rewritten advance/retard angle value and the ignition timing is controlled to suit the respective engine conditions in accordance with the correction advance/retard angle values preliminarily rewritten in response to the feedback factor.
