    Abstract: A water filter cartridge is provided. The water filter cartridge includes a filter housing enclosing a filtration material therein. A port shield is connected at one end of the filter housing and disposed between the filter housing and a connector part adapted for securing the water filter cartridge to a refrigerator filter part. The port shield is provided for at least partially covering a water inlet port and a water outlet port extending at least between the connector part through the port shield and at least partially through the filter housing. The port shield at least partially encloses the water inlet and/or water outlet port therebetween and also separates the filtration material and unfiltered water within the filter housing from the portions of the water inlet and outlet port within the port shield.

    Abstract: A water pitcher with sensing capabilities is provided. The water pitcher includes at least a container adapted or otherwise shaped for retaining water therein, and a cover adapted to cover at least a portion of the container. The water pitcher further includes an indication assembly attached to the container and/or the cover. The indication assembly includes at least a sensor for detecting movement of contents within the water pitcher and/or movement of the pitcher upon expiration of a filter within the pitcher. Upon detecting movement of the pitcher, the sensor is configured to activate an indicator (e.g., an LED) for notifying a user of the expired filter and/or movement of the pitcher during the expiration period of the filter.

    Abstract: In a method for cleaning a portable filter assembly including an elongated housing and a mouthpiece assembled with an outlet end port of the housing, the mouthpiece is disassembled from a female threaded portion of the outlet end port. A male threaded end connection of a cleaning fluid source is assembled to the female threaded portion of the outlet end port. A pressurized cleaning fluid is supplied from the cleaning fluid source to the outlet end port and through a filter element disposed in a fluid passage of the housing to expel the cleaning fluid and trapped contaminants from an inlet end port of the housing.
