摘要: A method for printing one or more desired features on a polymeric substrate. In an example embodiment, the method includes receiving an ink that includes a bio-reactive indicator material, and employing a piezoelectric printhead to deposit the ink on a polymeric substrate. The polymer substrate with the ink deposited thereon represents a diagnostic testing device for performing a test on a material sample. The method further includes employing UltraViolet (UV) light to cure the ink. The ink may include an electrically conductive material. A UV light source may be coupled to a piezoelectric printhead and actuated in response to a control signal from a controller to facilitate curing materials deposited on the polymeric substrate.

摘要: An optical media device comprises a mask layer placed over a data layer, and that includes chemical ingredients designed to render the data layer unreadable by an optical reader in a first initial state, and allow the data layer to be read when converted to a second state. The mask layer is optically opaque in the first state, and is optically transparent in the second state. The chemical ingredients include a dye that absorbs light in the visible light and/or optical reader spectrum, and a further chemical that is activatable to shift the dye's absorption wavelength so the data layer can be read by the optical reader. The activation source is radiative emission having a wavelength different from that of visible light and/or the optical reader. The activation source can be used at the point of sale of the device to render the device readable upon purchase.

摘要: A system for selectively inhibiting unauthorized use of an optical device. In an illustrative embodiment, the system implements an optical-device play-prevention system and copy-prevention system. The system includes a first set of data that is encoded via pit structures of the optical disc. A read system, such as a disc drive, which includes a read laser, is adapted to read the first set of data. A first material, which is positioned on or within the disc, changes transparency to laser light from the read laser in response to a first predetermined energy, such as ultrasound. A second material that is positioned on or within the disc temporarily changes transparency to the laser light, in response to a second predetermined energy, such as energy from the read laser. Changes in transparency of the first material and the second material change accessibility of the first set of data to the read system. The system further includes instructions executable by the read system for enabling or disabling reading, playing, and/or copying of the optical disc by the read system based on the accessibility of the first data to the read system.
