The vinyl resin comprises 80% by weight or more of a unit of an aromatic compound having a vinyl-polymerizable functional group. A method of manufacturing the above toner is also provided, including steps of dissolving or dispersing the binder resin, the colorant, and the release agent in an organic solvent to prepare an oily liquid, dispersing the oily liquid in an aqueous medium to prepare the core particles, and adhering particles of a vinyl resin to the surfaces of the core particles to form shell layers.
