    Abstract: Hydrocarbon olefins are oxidized to carbonyl compounds by contacting the olefin and oxygen with a liquid phase reaction medium containing water, a carboxylic acid and as the only catalyst components a Group VIII noble metal and an alkali metal ammonium or hydrogen chloride or bromide. The reaction proceeds at a high conversion rate despite the absence of any recognized redox agent for the Group VIII noble metal to produce acetaldehyde from ethylene, acetone from propylene and methylethyl ketone from butene.
