Actuation mechanisms driven by rotary motors are described whereby linear movement of a mechanical component, typically a lens barrel, is effected without rotating the linear moving component. For mechanisms driven by miniature piezoelectric motors, this is accomplished by driving a rotor which in turn causes linear, and only linear, movement of a lens barrel according to structures described in different embodiments. A preferred embodiment includes a threaded rotor moving both rotationally and axially that drives a two-piece lens barrel assembly. Another embodiment includes a rotor having a grooved split ring on its outer surface that does not move axially and drives a lens barrel through a threaded interface. Another embodiment includes a two-piece rotor that does not move axially and drives a lens barrel through a threaded interface. Typically, anti-rotation pins and corresponding grooves in a fixed structure are used to prevent the lens barrel from rotating.

A magnetic recording disk drive achieves continuous contact recording with a head-suspension assembly that compensates for the moment generated from an adhesive force between the head carrier or slider and the disk. The slider pivot point, which is the point where the load force is applied to the flexure that supports the slider, is located closer to the front end of the slider than the net force applied by the air-bearing surface of the slider when the disk is rotating at its operational speed. This assures that the net air-bearing force generates a moment about the pivot point to partially counteract the flexure moment and the moment generated from the adhesive force between the disk and the slider's contact pad.

At least three spaced apart write elements, two of parallel azimuthal orientation, and at least one of a different azimuthal orientation, write patterns corresponding to the write elements, fixing both the distance between transitions having different azimuthal orientation, the “A” distance, and the distance between transitions having parallel azimuthal orientation, the “B” distance. The fixed distances provide precise sensing of lateral position based on a measure of time over the “A” distance compared to time over the “B” distance.

A hard disk drive has a rotatable disk and an actuator arm that pivots relative to the disk. The arm has a cantilevered mounting support with a suspension extending therefrom. A head gimbal assembly is secured to the suspension for reading/writing data to the disk. The mounting support is a two-piece design with a pair of virtually identical support elements. The distal end of each support element has an aperture with a tab that protrudes into the aperture. The tabs extend in opposite directions. The support elements mount on top of each other in a matching alignment configuration. The proximal ends of the support elements closely receive a pivot assembly to secure them from relative movement. On the distal ends, the apertures of the support elements substantially align such that their tabs precise engage each other in an interference fit. The interlocking tabs and tight fitting pivot assembly combine structurally to give the assembled mounting support enhanced bending, torsional stiffness, and shock resistance.

A hard disk drive suspension having a load beam with an original thickness of 4 mils (approximately 0.1 mm) is simultaneously etched on both sides in selected areas to approximately half of its original thickness. The selective partial etching makes intricate features which are otherwise unattainable by conventional forming operations. These features reduce the weight of the load beam and provide a very stiff structure when the etched features or pockets are enclosed in an extended, box-like fashion by a flexure and mount plate. The only press forming operations remaining are to generate a load/unload tab semicircular cross-section and dimple. This configuration more than triples the first torsion frequency from about 2 to 6 KHz or higher, thereby increasing the servo band width by a multiple of 3. Moreover, when the box-like portion of the suspension is replaced by milliactuator motors, the etched suspension meets the mass, inertia, sag, and servo bandwidth requirements with micro-actuation capability.

The laminated member is comprised of a support layer, an electrically insulating layer, and an electrically conducting layer. The electrical lines are formed directly into the laminated member. A first end of the support layer has an aperture into which a tongue section protrudes. The transducer head is attached to the tongue section. A platform section is formed between the aperture and the end of the support layer. The electrical lines run to the transducer head along the platform section. The load beam is attached to the laminated member and provides rigid support. The load beam has an aperture located directly above the platform section and provides access to allow clamping of the electrical lines and the platform section during electrical attach of the lines to the transducer head. Precise electrical attachment is achieved without unwanted bending of the delicate flexure section of the suspension.
