A system is provided for automatically activating a boot-mountable highback between a walk mode and a ride position. In the walk mode, the highback is unrestrained, permitting the boot to flex freely, and consequently allowing the rider to walk comfortably. In the ride position, the highback is tilted toward the toe portion of a boot and prevented from movement in the heel direction beyond a preselected forward lean position, so that leg movement in the heel direction is transmitted through the highback into a gliding board. The highback is adjusted between the walk mode and the ride position simply by stepping into or out of a binding attached to a snowboard. Activation and deactivation of the highback may be achieved through direct or indirect interaction with a board-mounted actuator that may be attached to the binding. A forward lean adjuster may be provided that allows a rider to preselect the amount of forward lean attained when the highback is activated into the ride position.

One embodiment is directed to a system for mounting a rider to a snowboard, and an interface for use in such a system. The system comprises a snowboard boot, a snowboard binding and an interface having at least one mating feature adapted to be releasably engaged by the snowboard binding. The interface further includes at least one strap adapted to mount the interface to the snowboard boot. The outer sole of the snowboard boot includes a recess rearward of the arch area that is adapted to receive the interface so that the interface does not protrude below the outer sole when the interface is mounted to the snowboard boot. In another embodiment, the interface includes a base that is adapted to pass under the sole of the snowboard boot, the base having a non-planar contoured upper surface that is adapted to fit within a recess in a sole of the snowboard boot. In another embodiment, the mating feature of the interface includes at least one engagement pin that extends outwardly from medial and lateral sides of the interface and is circular in cross-section. The various features of the system can be combined or used separately.

A combined ski boot and binding giving improved protection from leg breakages includes a two part boot having an ankle cuff portion pivotal about a base portion, and a releasable rear binding which directly connects the ankle cuff portion and the ski. The rear binding releases not only in response to a forwards pivotal force applied to the whole boot, as in conventional safety release bindings, but also, at least partly, in response to pivotal movement between the ankle cuff portion and the base portion of the boot. Another feature of the invention is a toe binding comprising a support pivotal about an axis normal to the ski, the support carrying two laterally spaced spring biased plungers, the ends of which engage in recesses in the toe of the boot, so that release of the toe can occur by simultaneously sideways swiveling of the boot and the support.

The locking device may be used in a ski boot for locking or releasing the shell and cuff relative to each other. The locking device comprises a male member and a female member, which members comprise respective engaging elements adapted to cooperate with each other, and actuating elements for moving the members from a configuration in which the male member is disengaged from the female member to a configuration in which the male member is engaged with the female member. The engaging elements of the male member and/or the engaging elements of the female member have a tapered or conical shape, whereby it is possible to make a coupling without clearance between the male member and the female member when the members are engaged.
