    Abstract: The application of fluid additive to a moving filter tow for production of filter rod for cigarettes, is controlled by a system which provides monitoring of rate of application of the additive by weight. Fluid additive, such as plasticizer, is pumped from a measuring cylinder to an applicator booth, excess additive draining back to the cylinder. Pressure in the cylinder is monitored by a transducer and a control circuit is provided to compare the rate of loss of additive from the cylinder (as measured by change in pressure) with a required value and adjust the supply pump by way of a motor and gearbox accordingly. Fluid additive is periodically supplied to the cylinder from a flask and reservoir.

    Abstract: Apparatus for applying liquids including a main body and a carrier supporting the main body for movement, the main body having mounted therein conduits and charge-over valves for supplying liquids, and spray nozzles for spraying the liquids in predetermined amounts onto a liquid-absorptive, resilient contacting member to enable the latter to apply the liquids to a surface by sliding rubbing contact therewith as the carrier is actuated or for spraying the liquids directly onto the surface. The liquids absorbed by the contacting member are squeezed therefrom when a surface cleaning operation or a liquid applying operation is completed or any time the contacting member is soiled, by bringing the contacting member into pressing engagement with a liquid receiving pan. The contacting member may be in the form of a cylinder and mounted at a forward end of a hollow shaft rotatably connected to the carrier, so that the contacting member can be brought into rubbing sliding contact with the surface to apply the liquids thereto or can be covered with a movable cover to remove absorbed liquids by centrifugal forces. The conduits for supplying the liquids are connected to tanks containing the liquids and divided into a cleaning liquid feeding system and an applied liquid feeding system, and the change-over valves are capable of switching the apparatus between the two systems. The main body is capable of movement in a three dimensional space determined by the movement of various elements of the carrier in the directions of the X, Y and Z axes.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the art of coating glassware while the ware is moving through an annealing lehr which is provided with a cooling section near the exit end of the lehr. The cooling section is of the continuous recirculation type providing an arrangement for generally cooling the ware to a relatively even temperature even though the ware is moving through the lehr in multiple rows and columns. The ware is moved through the lehr on a lehr belt which is formed as a webbed belt and constitutes a foraminous conveyor. A lubricious material in the form of a vapor or mist of an organic, non-metallic coating material selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, fatty acids and their derivatives is injected into the recirculating cooling air in the cooling section of the lehr to thereby form a durable lubricious coating on the exterior surfaces of the glass article. The articles, at the time they are passed through the cooling section, will be at a temperature between 200.degree. F. and 400.degree. F. The vapor generator used to form the vapor or mist has an outlet tube of at least one foot in length extending vertically from the generating chamber to avoid injection of any condensate into the cooling section of the lehr.
