A pair of ribbon spools are independently operated by respective motors to rotate in one direction until the ribbon end and then in the opposite direction, and so forth. Spools alternately function as feed and take-up spools and motors as a drive and drag motors, respectively To eliminate excess drag motor cogging, a ribbon tension control system uses dynamic braking of the drag motor, and includes drag circuitry with rectifier bridge circuitry and a constant current sink settable for drawing predefined selectable levels of current from the windings of the drag motor. The motors are polyphase, permanent magnet, stepper motors which, when turned by the ribbon, generate alternating back emf signals in their windings. A full-wave rectifier bridge is connected to each winding of the drag motor with bridge outputs connected to a common sink which is an emitter follower circuit whose current level is set and maintained by an operational amplifier. The current level of the emitter follower circuit is set by adjusting the reference voltage of the amplifier using a resistive voltage divider network connected to a binary switch controlled by a microprocessor with a memory. The microprocessor monitors the back emf signals, periodically adjusts the rotational speed of the drive motor depending on distribution of ribbon, and adjusts the sink based on drag value tables stored in memory.

A method and apparatus for controlling the tension in a tape (16, 18) along a feed path between a reel (84, 112) and a processing station (20) is disclosed. A motor (146, 162) having a controllable torque is coupled to the reel. An advancement mechanism (22, 142) advances the tape through the processing station. Sensors (190, 192) produce signals proportional to the advancement of the tape through the processing station as well as the advance of the reel. These signals are compared to produce an indicia of the present operating radius of the tape on the reel, which is dependent upon the amount of tape wound upon the reel. With this indicia determined, empirically derived data can be consulted to determined the energization of the motor necessary to produce a torque that will compensate for the changing tape diameter on the reel, maintaining the tension in the tape substantially constant independent of the transfer of tape with respect to the reel. In a preferred embodiment, this arrangement is employed to control the tension in thermal transfer ribbon (16) and receiving paper (18) between a print roller (22) and their respective reels (146, 162) in a thermal transfer printer (10).

A ribbon tension control for controlling the tension of ribbon traveling between a rotating supply spool and a rotating take-up spool varies the amount of braking torque applied to the supply spool to hold ribbon tension constant as the distribution of ribbon between the spools changes. A generator rotationally coupled to the supply spool produces braking torque to resist the rotation of the spool when the generator windings are electrically loaded. The loading of the generator is controlled by processing feedback signals emitted by the generator to provide periodic load switching signals. Processing of the feedback signal is accomplished in the exemplary embodiment by a drag lookup table which is addressed by the feedback signal. The drag lookup table produces a duty cycle value which is used to determine the duty cycle of the switching signal, which, in turn, controls the electrical loading of the generator. Because electrical loading of the generator at the switching signal rate modulates the feedback signal which it emits, the period of the switching signal is sufficiently different from that of the feedback signal to permit separation of the feedback signal from the switching signal.
