A process for the alkylation of alkane with olefin or olefin precursor such as an oligomer of tertiary olefin comprising contacting a liquid system comprising acid catalyst, isoparaffin and olefin in concurrent downflow into contact in a reaction zone with a disperser mesh under conditions of temperature and pressure to react said isoparaffin and said olefin to produce an alkylate product is disclosed. Preferably, the liquid system is maintained at about its boiling point in the reaction zone. Unexpectedly, the olefin oligomers have been found to function as olefin precursors and not as olefins in the reaction. Thus, for example, a cold acid alkylation using an oligomer of isobutene (principally dimer and trimer) with isobutane produces isooctane with the isobutane reacting with the constituent isobutene units of the oligomers on a molar basis. The product isooctane is essentially the same as that produced in the conventional cold acid process.

Disclosed is a device for the production of alkylate(s) by sulfuric acid alkylation of at least one isoparaffin such as isobutane with at least one olefin, such as butylenes. The device includes a mixing chamber for preparing a mixture of the isoparaffin with recycled reaction products. It also includes an emulsion chamber for preparing a first hydrocarbons-in-sulfuric acid emulsion, where the mixture prepared in the mixing chamber is injected in multiple parallel jets into a sulfuric acid composition. The device further includes a pre-reaction chamber for preparing a second emulsion, where a given portion of the olefin is injected in jet streams into the first hydrocarbons-in-sulfuric acid emulsion coming from the emulsion chamber. Last of all, the device includes a reaction chamber of given height and cross-section where the second emulsion coming from the pre-reaction chamber is injected through nozzles and another portion of olefin is injected in jet streams all over the cross-section and height of the reaction chamber. The reaction chamber is devised so that the second emulsion is circulated in a closed circuit and it has an outlet through which a balanced amount of reaction mixture is continuously discharged. All of said mixing chamber, emulsion chamber, pre-reaction chamber and reaction chamber are coaxially arranged one above the other in vertical position and altogether form a reactor with the prechamber being located at the bottom of the reactor and the reaction chamber on top thereof. A method for the production of alkylates by means of the above device is also disclosed.

A system and/or process for removing water from an alkylation catalyst mixture of an alkylation process is disclosed. The process includes passing an alkylation reaction zone effluent to a settler for separation into a hydrocarbon phase and a catalyst mixture phase; passing at least a portion of the hydrocarbon phase, as a settler effluent stream containing alkylate, water, HF and volatility reducing additive, to a first separator; removing and condensing a first overhead stream from the first separator thereby forming an HF/water stream; passing the HF/water stream to a second separator for separation into a modified HF stream containing HF and volatility reducing additive and into an HF/water azeotrope stream containing HF and water; using the modified HF stream as a part of the alkylation catalyst mixture and; removing water from the system by removing the HF/water azeotrope stream from the second separator.

Disclosed is a process for the alkylation of an olefin with an isoparaffin using sulphuric acid as a catalyst. In this process, a finely-dispersed emulsion of isoparaffin and sulphuric acid is prepared first, in a separate emulsion preparation zone. This preparation is carried out by injecting the isoparaffin into the acid through a set of nozzles, thereby allowing the isoparaffin to "scavenge" at high speed through the acid and thus to form an extremely homogeneous emulsion. This makes it possible to achieve proper mixing without need of impellers or other similar mixing devices that usually call for substantial maintenance and operating costs. Then, the emulsion that was so prepared and which forms an already "finished" phase per se, is fed into a reaction zone which is separate from the emulsion preparation zone and in which the olefin is injected preferably at a plurality of points and in directions perpendicular to the emulsion flow. Advantageously, such an injection can be controlled so that the volume ratio of sulphuric acid to hydrocarbons present within the reaction zone is as low as from 0.3 to 0.5:1. This process allows reduction in the rate of expenditure of the raw materials, especially sulphuric acid, through the way and ratios at which the materials are mixed, and through analysis of the alkylation reaction process. An optimized, small-size, high-capacity and ecologically-clean apparatus for carrying out this process is also disclosed.

Disclosed is an alkylation process which utilizes a mixture of sulfone and hydrogen fluoride as an alkylation catalyst. The process provides for the removal of light ASO from the alkylation catalyst that accumulates therein as a result of the inability to remove the light ASO produced as a by-product of the alkylation reaction.
