A solution spinning process for the production of a textile fiber with permanent repellent action includes the steps of preparing a spinnable polymer component and an ambivalent polymer compound which contains a repelling group and a residual group with an affinity for the spinnable polymer component, mixing the ambivalent polymer compound with the spinnable polymer component in a solvent, and spinning the mixture into a fiber, wherein the repelling groups orient themselves in the direction of the surface of the forming fiber and migrate to the surface, while the affine residual groups anchor the ambivalent polymer compound in the spinnable polymer compound as the solvent is driven off.

The present invention is directed to chitosan-containing acrylic fibers having a total chitosan content of 0.05 to 2% by weight and an extractable chitosan content of not less than 0.03% by weight to less than the total chitosan content. The antimicrobial activity of the chitosan-containing acrylic fibers of the present invention can persist for a long period of time and is not deteriorated even when subjected to posttreatments, such as dyeing and bleaching of fibers, and treatments in usual service environments of fiber products, such as washing and ironing.

Methods of making polymeric fibers are provided and include spinning a solution containing at least one polymer, a modified pigment having attached at least one organic group, and a solvent. The polarity of the solvent and the polarity of the modified pigment are selected such that the polymer is soluble in the solution and the modified pigment is maintained dispersed throughout the solution. The polarity of the modified pigment may be substantially the same as the polarity of the solvent. Fibers of acrylic-containing polymers and other polymeric fibers are also provided. Articles and reinforcing material containing the various fiber(s) are also described.

A thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber comprising an acrylonitrile polymer in which a thermochromic pigment composition with an average particle diameter of from 0.5 &mgr;m to 30 &mgr;m is dispersedly contained in an amount of from 0.5% by weight to 40% by weight based on the weight of the polymer, and being made into fibers; the pigment composition containing (a) an electron-donating color-developing organic compound, (b) an electron-accepting compound and (c) a reaction medium that determines the temperature at which the color-developing reaction of the both compounds takes place. Also disclosed are a processed article of the above thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber, and a process for producing the thermochromic acrylic synthetic fiber.

This invention describes high-strength fibers with high initial moduli from homopolymers or copolymers comprising at least 70% by weight repeating acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile units, and a process especially adapted for their preparation, and their use, especially as reinforcing materials or for producing filters or friction coatings. The fibers according to the invention have a strength of more than 100 cN/tex and an initial modulus of more than 15 N/tex (based on 100% elongation).
