A negative electrode active material of the present invention includes a core containing silicon-based nanoparticles and polymer carbides distributed on the nanoparticles, wherein the core has a size of 30-300 nm, and such a negative electrode active material is prepared using a method including dispersing a suspension in which silicon-based nanoparticles and water-soluble polymer are added to a solvent using ultrasonic waves; and preparing a core including the silicon-based nanoparticles having the polymer carbides on the surface by carbonizing the water-soluble polymer. As a result, a negative electrode active material having a significantly low volume expansion rate compared with general non-carbon-based negative electrode active materials, and having excellent electric conductivity may be provided.

Provided is a sulfur-modified polyacrylonitrile manufacturing method that is characterized in that a starting base powder that comprises sulfur powder and polyacrylonitrile powder is mixed and the mixture is heated in a non-oxidizing environment while outflow of sulfur vapor is prevented. Also provided are a cathode for lithium batteries that uses, as the active substance, the sulfur-modified polyacrylonitrile manufactured with the method, and a lithium secondary battery that includes the cathode as a component element. This enables the practical use of an inexpensive sulfur-based material as the cathode material for lithium secondary batteries, and in particular, a sulfur-based cathode material that enables higher output and has excellent cycle life characteristics, as well as other characteristics, and secondary lithium batteries using the same can be obtained.

The surface of a polymer containing hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile in the form of particulates, is modified by crosslinking in a water/alcohol reaction mixture and in the presence of silica. The resulting product features improved absorbency under load and lesser degree of gel blocking.

In a process for producing an acrylonitrile polymer melt in a substantially melted state by polymerizing a monomer mixture containing acrylonitrile in the presence of water at elevated temperature under increased pressure, the polymerization is carried out continuously using a persulfate as the polymerization initiator and under a particular forced stirring as defined in the specification. This process effectively suppresses runaway polymerization reaction, facilitates the melting of the resulting polymer, and in addition produces in an industrially advantageous manner a melt of an acrylonitrile polymer having a moderate molecular weight.
