摘要:
A method of generating electricity and fixing nitrogen oxides is disclosed in which coal is gasified at high pressure to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, with a minimal amount of hydrogen and water, as a gas stream. This high pressure gas stream is mixed with an oxidant to introduce mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen and then completely combusted. The high temperature combustion gas is then further ionized to form a plasma and its velocity is increased, while its high pressure is maintained. The high pressure, high velocity plasma is fed into an MHD generator to produce electricity and where it is adiabatically expanded to fix the nitrogen oxides contained therein. The final gas stream, with the fixed nitrogen oxide compounds therein, is thereafter reacted to form nitric acid.

The heat required for operation of a two-phase liquid-metal MHD generator is obtained from the waste heat of a plasma MHD generator. The liquid metal is heated by passing it in heat exchange relationship to the combustion mixture exhausted from the plasma MHD generator and the inert gas is heated by cooling the walls of the combustion chamber and plasma MHD generator.

A nonequilibrium magnetohydrodynamic system in which the working fluid is subjected to a magnetic field over the entire distance between the throat of the expansion nozzle and the exit plane of the generator region of the device is disclosed; the system is operable without an external power source otherwise necessary for auxiliary ionization of the working medium. Also disclosed are the flow velocity, magnetic field intensity, pressure and temperature parameters which must be satisfied to produce the operational conditions.

A fuel for a magnetohydrodynamic generator in which readily ionizable seed material additives of potassium compounds, and if desired performance boosting metallic additives, are suspended in a carrier liquid such as kerosene, benzene, toluene or like fuel carrier hydrocarbons, said seed material additive being an organo-metallic compound, namely C8H15O2K.

An MHD power system is provided in which the working fluid consists of combustion gases that are recycled through an MHD generator with new fuel and oxidant being added and an equal mass of gas being discharged at some point in the cycle to provide what may be called a ''''semi-closed cycle.'''' Such a cycle provides improved electrical conductivity of the working fluid as compared with open cycle systems that are operated with excess oxidant while it also provides increased mass flow as compared with open cycle systems that are operated without excess oxidant.

THIS DISCLOSURE IS CONCERNED WITH A NOVEL PROCESS FOR RAPIDLY HEATING A GAS STREAM TO A SPECIFIC RANGE OF VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES BY INTRODUCING SAID GAS STREAM TOGETHER WITH ELECTRONS OR A SOURCE THEREOF INTO A HEATING ZONE WHICH IS SUBJECTED TO THERMAL RADIATION AND WHICH CONTAINS A SUBSTANTIAL QUANTITY OF A HOT PLASMA WHICH IS PREFERABLY MAINTAINED UNDER PRESSURE. THE GAS STREAM ENTERING THE HEATING ZONE MIXES WITH THE HOT PLASMA AND ABSORBS HEAT THEREFROM AS WELL AS FROM THE WALLS OF THE HEATING ZONE ITSELF BY RADIATION. THE HEATED PLASMA IS THEN WITHDRAWN FROM THE HEATING ZONE AT A RATE SUCH THAT THE AMOUNT OF PLASMA IN THE HEATING ZONE REMAINS SUBSTANTIALLY CONSTANT.

A jet propulsion power plant comprising in succession a compressor, a supplemental heating means, an expansion gas turbine, a main heating means, and a magnetoplasmadynamic generator adapted to supply at least a part of the energy necessary for driving the compressor. The compressor is driven by an electrical motor means electrically connected to the magnetoplasmadynamic generator and to a supplemental generator rotated by the expansion gas turbine.
