The invention relates to a composition, comprising: at least one basic alkali metal salt of at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted acidic organic compound, wherein the hydrocarbyl group is derived from a polyalkene having an Mn of at least 600, provided that when the organic compound is a sulfonic acid, the polyalkene has an Mn of at least 900; and provided that when the acidic organic compound is a mixture of acidic organic compounds containing a carboxylic acid and a sulfonic acid which has a hydrocarbyl group derived from a polyalkene having an Mn of less than 900, then the carboxylic acid comprises at least 10% of the equivalents of the mixture. Methods for preparing the salts and lubricating compositions containing the salts are described.

Oil based compositions are disclosed which are comprised of oil having a multi-functional additive component therein. The additive component is present in sufficient amounts so as to provide improved performance characteristics to the composition such as water tolerance and antiwear characteristics. The additive is a compound represented by the general structural formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrocarbyl, preferably iso-stearyl, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are independently hydrogen or alkyl, preferably hydrogen, n is 1 to 20, preferably 5, and X is a cation, preferably Ca. Overbased and mixed salts of the additive compound are also disclosed. The additive is an effective EP agent, water tolerance fix in a variety of functional fluids and lubricating compositions.

Basic metal dihydrocarbylphosphorodithioates and phosphoromonothioates are prepared by employing a catalytic amount of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or mixtures thereof. Also basic, multiple metal complexes of various dihydrocarbylphosphorodithioic acids have been developed. These salts and complexes are highly effective antiwear and antioxidant additives for functional fluids, e.g., lubricating oils.

A corrosion inhibitor additive for gear oil formulations is disclosed in the form of an overbased carboxylate which can be in a borated or non-borated form. Borated versions of the overbased carboxylate are preferred and are obtained by reacting a boron reactant such as boric acid with an overbased carboxylate. The overbased carboxylate in its borated and non-borated forms has been found to be effective in improving the corrosion inhibiting properties of gear oil formulations which are used under severe operating conditions wherein the gear oil might come into contact with contaminant water. A method of improving the corrosion resistance of a gear oil having contaminant water therein is also disclosed.

Disclosed are a lubricant composition comprising a major amount of one or more lubricant fluids and at least one polyvalent metal salt of the formaldehyde condensation products of C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 alkyl hydroxy benzoic acid, and a method of preparation of same. Because of the methylenebis structure of the polyvalent metal salts, engine properties such as detergency/dispersancy, thermal stability, hydrolytic stability, oil solubility and especially compatibility with other additives are improved by the use of the composition.

A process for making an oil solution of a highly basic alkali metal compound which comprises(a) heating alkali metal hydroxide with an alkoxyalkanol and a solvent to remove water as an azeotrope with alkoxyalkanol and said solvent;(b) adding to the mixture surfactant;(c) thereafter introducing carbon dioxide into the reaction mixture so as to react with the basic compounds therein;(d) hydrolysing the reaction mixture; and(e) removing solvent by distillation,base oil being added to the process during one of steps (b), (c), (d) and (e) so that the desired product is obtained.

The invention describes a process for overbasing a substrate comprising mixing the substrate, water, a phenol, a source of magnesium and a carbonating agent, wherein the water is retained throughout the overbasing reaction and provided further that the weight ratio of the water to the magnesium is in a 10:1 to 1:5 weight ratio, thereby obtaining a magnesium overbased substrate.
