    Abstract: A rotor assembly for a gas turbine engine. The rotor assembly comprising: a rotor comprising a plurality of rotor blades, wherein the rotor is arranged to rotate about an axis of rotation; a sensor arranged to measure a rotational signal indicative of the rotational speed of the rotor at a measurement point on the rotor; and a processor in communication with the sensor. The processor is arranged to receive the rotational signal and derive a rotor impact signal based on an offset in the measured rotational speed of the rotor at the measurement point. The rotor has an axial length (L) parallel to the axis of rotation, and the sensing apparatus is arranged to measure the rotational speed of the rotor at a measurement point along the axial length of the rotor, the measurement point corresponding to a position at or near an antinode of a torsional oscillation of the rotor resulting from an impact event. A method of detecting an object impact event on a rotor of a rotor assembly of a gas turbine engine is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method of detecting an anomaly in a crystallographic structure, the method comprising: illuminating the structure with x-ray radiation in a known direction relative to the crystallographic orientation; positioning the structure such that its crystallographic orientation is known; detecting a pattern of the diffracted x-ray radiation transmitted through the structure; generating the simulated pattern based on the known direction relative to the crystallographic orientation; comparing the detected pattern to a simulated pattern for x-ray radiation illuminating in the known direction; and, detecting the anomaly in the crystallographic structure based on the comparison.

    Abstract: There is disclosed wall cooling system 50 having a double-wall geometry. A first wall 55 and a second wall 60 extend over a plan area with the second wall spaced from the first wall by a gap. The first wall 55 has multiple upstanding members 65 spanning the gap and contacting the second wall 60 such that the first and second walls are mechanically and thermally connected. The first wall 55 is shaped so as to provide a two-dimensional array of crests 85 and recesses 90. The crests 85 are spaced from the second wall 60. The first wall 55 has a plurality of through-holes 70 for flow of coolant through the first wall and into the gap. The cooling system 50 is suitable for use in a gas turbine engine 10, for example in the turbine 17, 19.

    Abstract: A bladed disc for a turbine engine has disc and blade portions. The disc portion extends in a radial direction from the turbine engine central axis and has slots around its circumference with an inverse fir tree profile. The blade portion has aerofoil and root sections. The root section is configured to have a fir tree profile. The blade portion engages with a slot on the disc portion circumference with the fir tree profile of the root section of the blade portion engaging with the inverse fir tree profile of the slot within the disc portion. The fir tree profile of the root section of the blade portion and the inverse fir tree profile of the slot of the disc portion are curved. The bladed disc has a clearance plate mounted on at least one of the blades, the clearance plate extending across the slot on the disc portion.

    Abstract: A combustion chamber comprises an upstream end wall, at least one fuel injector and at least one seal. Each fuel injector is arranged in a corresponding aperture in the wall. Each seal is arranged in a one of the apertures in the wall and around one of the fuel injectors. Each seal has a first portion, a second portion and a third portion. The second portion abuts the corresponding fuel injector. The third portion is arranged at the downstream end of the seal and increases in diameter in a downstream direction. The first portion is arranged upstream of the second portion and has a plurality of coolant apertures extending there-through. The coolant apertures extend through the first portion with axial, radial and tangential components. The seals produce better mixing between the coolant and the fuel and air mixture from the fuel injectors to reduce emissions produced in the combustion chamber.

    Abstract: An axial flux electrical machine comprises a first flux generating assembly, a second flux generating assembly, a shaft and a speed controller. The shaft has an axis of rotation. The gearbox is an epicyclic gearbox comprising planet gears, each of which is rotatable about its own axis on a respective pin with a journal bearing formed between each planet gear and its respective pin.     Abstract: An annular air swirler configured to receive a fuel injector in a central bore. The swirler has one or more annular channels, defined by radially facing channel walls and having an inlet for receiving compressed air and an axially distal outlet. The channel walls converge inwardly towards the outlet and swirl vanes extend between opposing faces of the walls. The swirler turns incoming air to create a vortex at the channel outlet. An annular cooling apparatus associated with the air swirler is arranged axially adjacently downstream of the channel outlet(s), and includes a skirt portion radially spaced from a converging portion of the outermost channel wall defining a converging portion of a bowed coolant channel. A radially outwardly extending wall connects with the outermost channel wall and, with a face of the skirt portion, defines a radially outwardly extending portion of the bowed coolant channel adapted for increased heat exchange.
