Abstract:
A method and system for parking aircraft at an airport terminal having a plurality of passenger loading bridges is disclosed. According to the invention, a parking space is defined at the terminal for an aircraft of a known type, such that at least a desired clearance is maintained between the aircraft of the known type and all other aircraft parked at the terminal. To this end, a passenger loading bridge associated with the defined parking space is moved so as to accommodate the known type of an aircraft at the defined parking space while maintaining the at least a desired clearance to all other aircraft parked at the terminal. In particular, at different instances of time for different instances of the known type of an aircraft, the associated passenger loading bridge is moved to substantially different locations to accommodate different defined parking spaces. A system for implementing the method includes a database having stored therein aircraft arrival information, a processor in communication with the database for defining the parking spaces such that at least a minimum spacing is maintained between adjacent aircraft and, a controller in communication with the processor, for controlling an interaction between aircraft and passenger loading bridges and terminal operations such that the defined aircraft parking spaces are implemented as actual parking spaces for the aircraft.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an overhead adjustable support system for use with an aircraft passenger boarding bridge, and especially for use with an aircraft passenger boarding bridge having at least two tunnel sections disposed one each on opposite sides of a flexible connection. A preferred embodiment of the overhead adjustable support system includes a first support member for being mounted to one of the at least two tunnel sections at a first point proximate the flexible connection. The first support member also has a free end for being disposed elevationally above the one of the at least two tunnel sections. The overhead adjustable support system also includes a second support member for being mounted to the other one of the at least two tunnel sections at a second point proximate the flexible connection, and has a free end for being disposed elevationally above the other one of the at least two tunnel sections. In addition, the overhead adjustable support system includes at least a lift mechanism having a first end and a second end opposite the first end, a distance between the first end and the second end being controllably variable. The at least a lift mechanism is in hinged communication at the first end thereof with the free end of the first support member and in hinged communication at the second end thereof with the free end of the second support member. During use, varying the distance between the first end and the second end of the at least a lift mechanism effects a change to the orientation of the at least two tunnel sections relative to the flexible connection so as to vertically swing one of the at least two tunnel sections relative to the other one of the at least two tunnel sections about a horizontal axis aligned with the flexible connection.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and system for aligning a door of an aircraft to a passenger loading bridge. A final parking position of the aircraft is defined as being immediately adjacent to a position of the passenger loading bridge, such that when the aircraft is stopped at the final parking position, the passenger loading bridge requires only a telescopic extension of less than about 1 meter to complete the alignment operation. To this end, an indicating device that works cooperatively with an aircraft-engaging end of the passenger loading bridge is provided for displaying human intelligible instructions for use by a pilot of the aircraft to guide the aircraft to the final parking position.
Abstract:
A method of enhancing network security is provided for a communication session initiated between a first computer and a second other computer. From the first computer to the second computer in communications therewith a process for securing communications therebetween is transmitted. One such process is a biometric characterisation process for characterising fingerprints. The process is for execution on the second computer and is selected to be compatible therewith. Communications from the second computer to the first computer are secured using the transmitted process on the second computer and using, on the first computer, a compatible process to the transmitted process. The host computer can modify or replace the process or data particular to the process before each session, during a session, or at intervals.
Abstract:
In the past, user authorization based on biometric information was conducted by correlating a single instance of biometric information against a template. By using this method, a percentage of the population is difficult to authenticate. Further, due to skin damage and injuries, sometimes biometric information is not suited to identification. A sore throat affecting voice information and scraped finger tips affecting fingerprint information are two examples of common problems with authorization in dependence upon biometric information. A method of authenticating a user in dependence upon biometric input information is disclosed. The method allows a user to select biometric information sources and a number of repetitions for each source in order to customize the process of biometric user authentication.
Abstract:
In the design of transcutaneous energy transfer devices, variation in spacing between coils results in energy transfer efficiency changes. These changes may have significant effect on a system. It is proposed to provide a plurality of implanted coils for receiving energy simultaneously. Preferably, a plurality of coil pairs is used for transferring energy simultaneously. Also, a feedback system for use in a multiple coil system is disclosed.
Abstract:
A detector for detecting detonatable devices such as land mines has a a search head with a probe having a tip for placing beneath the surface of the ground. The probe tip ultrasonically provides an indication of the presence of a metal or plastic material. A force sensor coupled to the probe time provides an indication of force at the tip as it is placed beneath the ground surface. Therefore, before too much force is applied to the tip, a user is warned and accidental detonation may be prevented.
Abstract:
In the design of transcutaneous energy transfer devices variation in spacing between the coils results in energy transfer efficiency changes. These changes may have other causes. It is proposed to use an autotuning circuit and a voltage control circuit in cooperation with feedback from the internal coil in order to better maintain energy transfer levels as desirable. The feedback is typically provided via IR communication; however, when skin is highly pigmented, IR communication is inefficient. A method and system for using RF signals to accomplish the communication is disclosed.
Abstract:
A method and system are provided for restricting the use of a vehicle such as an automobile to a person or persons whose fingerprints match biometric data stored within a memory in the vehicle's control system. A user's digitized fingerprints are stored in a non-volatile permanent ROM in the BIOS of a microcontroller on in a ROM accessed by a microprocessor. The microprocessor's primary task is that of executing instructions related to the operation of the vehicle, such as regulating the fuel flow rate, and performing other such tasks. Before the microprocessor can execute its instructions related to its primary task it, must complete and exit a conditional loop of instructions that relate to validating a user's "real-input" biometric data. Real scanned fingerprints must be compared with fingerprint(s) stored in ROM. If the result of the compare is a true, i.e. is a match, then the conditional loop is satisfied and the microprocessor can execute its instructions relating to operating the vehicle.
Abstract:
An optical imaging device such as a fingerprint imager or a CCD camera, has a reduced size due to the provision of multiple lenses which are associated with respective CCDs. The optical path between the lenses and the CCDs is shortened. In a fingerprint version of the device, a staircase-shaped prism is advantageously used in combination with the multiple lens and multiple CCD arrangement. An alignment means is provided to facilitate the reconstructing the image out of partial images created by separate CCDs.
