    Abstract: A Mach-Zehnder optical modulator creates a first driving signal to be applied to a first section, and a second driving signal to be applied to a second section, and includes a generator, an optical modulator, and a setting unit. The generator generates a first dither signal and a second dither signal. The optical modulator optical modulates an optical signal into a quaternary or more value optical modulation signal by applying the first driving signal superimposed by the first dither signal, and by applying the second driving signal superposed by the second dither signal. The setting unit sets, when a length of the second section is n times as long as the first section, the first dither signal and the second dither signal to have a same phase, and sets such that an amplitude of the first dither signal is n times as large as that of the second dither signal.

    Abstract: An optical device is formed on an optical IC chip. The shape of the optical IC chip is rectangular or parallelogram. The optical device induces: an optical device circuit; a first optical waveguide that is coupled to the optical device circuit; a pad that is electrically connected to the optical device circuit; a grating coupler; and a second optical waveguide that is coupled to the grating coupler. The pad is formed in a region close to a first side of the optical IC chip. The grating coupler is formed in a specified region, which is not close to the first side, on the optical IC chip. The first optical waveguide and the second optical waveguide are respectively extended to an edge of the optical IC chip.

    Abstract: An optical device includes an optical coupler that performs branching of the input light and outputs a first-type branched light and a second-type branched light; a polarization converter that changes the direction of polarization of the second-type branched light output from the optical coupler; and a polarization synthesizer that outputs a polarization multiplexed light by synthesizing the first-type branched light, which is output from the optical coupler, and the second-type branched light, which has the direction of polarization changed by the polarization converter. The optical coupler has the wavelength characteristic that cancels out the wavelength characteristic of the polarization synthesizer regarding the second-type branched light included in the polarization multiplexed light.

    Abstract: A tunable optical source includes a substrate, a light source disposed on the substrate, and a wavelength selecting element configured to select light of a specific wavelength as output light, from light emitted from the light source, in accordance with a control signal. On the substrate, a wavelength filter including multiple output ports and a photodetector are disposed. The wavelength filter is configured to receive a part of the output light and to output light beams to the respective output ports. The photodetector is configured to receive the light beam output from one of the output ports. The tunable optical source further includes an inspection waveguide connecting to the photodetector at one end, and an inspection light input unit for inputting inspection light provided at the other end of the inspection waveguide.

    Abstract: An optical transmitter includes: a light source; a wavelength detecting unit configured to detect a wavelength of light emitted from the light source; a wavelength difference information generating unit configured to generate wavelength difference information representing a wavelength difference between a predetermined reference wavelength and a wavelength of the light detected by the wavelength detecting unit; a subcarrier count determination unit configured to determine a number of subcarriers to be used, based on the wavelength difference indicated by the wavelength difference information; a multi-valued level determination unit configured to determine, for each of the subcarriers, a multi-valued level which is a number of bits transmitted by a corresponding subcarrier of the subcarriers; a modulated signal generating unit configured to generate a modulated signal by modulating the subcarriers such that each of the subcarriers has the determined multi-valued level.
