A washing machine is disclosed. The washing machine has a function of rotating a drum (130) at a low speed when a user pulls out laundry, enabling the user to easily search through the laundry. The washing machine includes a cabinet (100) defining an exterior appearance of the washing machine, a tub (120) mounted in the cabinet (100) and configured to receive wash water therein, a drum (130) rotatably mounted in the tub (120) and configured to receive laundry therein, an independent drive input unit (200) to send a drum rotating signal, so as to allow a user to operate the drum (130) independently of a washing process, and a control unit to control rotation of the drum (130) in response to a signal received from the independent drive input unit (200).

A washing method and a washing machine are provided. Wash water is drained from a tub prior to initiating a main spinning process, and wash water is supplied into a drum to decrease the volume of the laundry which is increased by the draining. Therefore, it is possible to effectively reduce the volume of laundry and thus to improve the mobility of the laundry. Then, a main spinning process is performed by spinning the drum at high speed.

A method for washing laundry and a washing machine, in which balancing of the laundry load is effectively carried out. The method for washing includes supplying wash water mixed with a detergent, spinning or rinsing the laundry by rotating the washing machine drum in which the laundry is located, thereby causing the laundry to be repeatedly lifted within and then fall towards the bottom of the drum. The method further involves balancing the laundry by repeatedly accelerating and decelerating the drum. The wash water is then drained.

There is provided a reliable method for sensing a laundry amount and a method for controlling a washing machine, in which a method for sensing a laundry amount is performed appropriately according to the laundry amount. According to the method of the present invention, the reliability in the sensed laundry amount is improved.

A washing machine and associated washing method are provided. The method may include rotating a drum, measuring and storing a vibration level of a cabinet while increasing a rotational speed of the drum, and measuring the vibration level of the cabinet after the rotational speed of the drum reaches a target rotational speed and determining whether or not the vibration level of the cabinet is greater than a set value. The method may then include adjusting the rotational speed of the drum if the vibration level is greater than the set value so as to minimize vibration and resonance in a support surface on which the washing machine is positioned.

A method for displaying a partial stroke mode of a washing machine is disclosed, which permits a user to recognize that a stroke mode other than a currently selected stroke mode is not performed if the user selects a partial stroke mode. The method for displaying a partial stroke mode of a washing machine having a display device includes the steps of displaying a whole washing stroke mode, which sequentially processes a series of stroke modes related with washing, and a partial washing stroke mode which processes some of the stroke modes if a power supply is applied, displaying courses corresponding to the partial washing stroke mode in the display device if the user selects the partial washing stroke mode, and displaying a guide message for a selected course in the display device if the user selects a desired course in the displayed courses. The method acts to prevent the user's undesired washing stroke mode from being performed and provides the user with convenience for use.

A spin cycle controlling apparatus for a washing machine includes a storage unit in which an acceleration rate, an allowable maximum unbalance amount and an allowable minimum unbalance amount according to an amount of laundry are pre-stored; and a controlling unit for repeatedly controlling an operation of increasing and decreasing revolutions per minute (RPM) in a region between the allowable maximum unbalance amount and the allowable minimum unbalance amount until an unbalance amount detected is less than the allowable minimum unbalance amount.
