Abstract: Systems and methods for implementing and using temporary movement buffers for residents of controlled-environment facilities are disclosed. In some embodiments, for example, a method may include determining that a resident of a controlled-environment facility is unable to access a communication device to be used during a communication event involving the resident. The method may also include performing at least one of: (a) allowing the communication event in response to a buffer value associated with the resident being smaller than a time to the communication event; or (b) declining the communication event in response to the buffer value associated with the resident being greater than the time to the communication event.

Abstract: Systems or methods for collective purchasing by controlled-environment facility residents may employ a plurality of controlled-environment facility resident communication and/or media devices, each associated with a respective controlled-environment facility resident. These devices, disposed within one or more controlled-environment facilities, may each present an interface for purchasing goods and/or services via the device. The devices may each offer, via the interface, an option to collectively purchase a single good or service by a number of controlled-environment facility residents and may accept an indication of partial payment from the resident associated with the device. A controlled-environment facility management system, or similar functionality, may debit the partial payment from a respective controlled-environment facility trust account maintained to the benefit of each controlled-environment facility resident making a partial payment and may provision the collectively purchased good or service to these residents.

Abstract: Systems and methods for developing, deploying, providing, and/or operating community-based investigative tools are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method may include receiving a query from a user (e.g., an investigator, etc.), the user associated with a given one of a plurality of controlled-environment facilities (e.g., a prison, jail, etc.), each of the plurality of facilities having access to a distinct database configured to store data relating to its respective residents (e.g., inmates). The method may also include determining an access level of the given one of the plurality of facilities. The method may further include retrieving information from one or more of the distinct databases in response to the query, the retrieved information commensurate with the access level. In some implementations, a database accessible to a first facility may not be accessible to a second facility unless the first and second facilities are members of the same investigative community.

Abstract: Systems and methods for developing, deploying, providing, and/or operating location-based services for controlled-environment facilities are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method may include receiving, from a resident of a controlled-environment facility, a request to establish a remote communication with a mobile device operated by a non-resident of the controlled-environment facility. The method may also include allowing or denying the request depending, at least in part, upon a physical location of the mobile device at the time of the request to establish the remote communication and subsequent monitoring during the allowed communication. The method may also include terminating an allowed remote communication based on the monitored location of the mobile device during the remote communication. In some cases, the method may also include comparing an indication of the physical location with a geo-fencing rule and taking a predetermined action in response to the comparison.

Abstract: Inbound call processing systems and methods for processing inbound calls to controlled-environment facility resident media and/or communications devices employ an inbound resident call server configured to host inbound calling accounts established by non-residents, receive inbound calls from the non-residents, route the inbound calls to an authenticating server, confirm that the resident device is active, and connect the inbound resident call system with the resident device if active or inform the non-resident the resident is not available if not. The inbound resident call server also connects the non-resident inbound call with the resident device if the non-resident is associated with the inbound calling account, the inbound calling account is associated with an address identifier of the resident device and the resident's personal identification number is associated with the address identifier of the resident device, all of which may be authenticated by the authenticating server.

Abstract: A controlled-environment facility local or remote content server downloads and caches a digital media file and determines whether a resident of the facility is allowed access to the digital media file. This determination may be made by the content server accessing a controlled-environment facility administration system. In response to a determination that the resident is allowed access, the digital media file is streamed and/or downloaded, from the content server, within a portion of the facility, to a controlled-environment facility resident media device adapted and/or approved for use by residents of the controlled-environment facility and disposed within the aforementioned portion of the facility. The streaming and/or downloading may be carried out, at least in part, via a wireless access point disposed within the portion of the controlled-environment facility to provide access by the resident media device disposed within the portion of the controlled-environment facility.

Abstract: Delivery of video to controlled-environment facility residents via podcasts may include accepting a digital video file or series of digital image files, such as from a non-resident, indicated as directed to a resident of the controlled-environment facility. Such video or image files may be uploaded, such as by the non-resident, via a provided user interface. The video file or series of digital image files are converted into a podcast. The podcast is cached in controlled-environment facility content server storage and the resident is notified of availability of the podcast. The podcast may be streamed and/or downloaded, within the controlled-environment facility, to one of the controlled-environment facility resident media devices.
