Abstract: A controllable air freshener unit in which a bottle filled with a volatile liquid fragrance is covered by a cap having vent holes therein that are covered by an absorbent membrane formed of microporous material disposed on the underside of the cap. When the bottle is placed in an upright position, the level of liquid is more or less below the cap and the membrane then acts as a barrier to prevent the discharge of fragrance vapor from the vented cap, the unit then being in its switched "off" state. When the bottle is placed in an inverted position raised above a supporting surface to expose the vented cap, the liquid then rests on the membrane and impregnates the pores thereof whereby a fragrance vapor is then wafted into the atmosphere and the unit is in its switched "on" state.

Abstract: Self-contained starboard and port light units that are receivable in the back-swept hollow arms of a bicycle handlebar to provide blinking light signals that are highly visible to drivers of vehicles to the rear of the bicyclist. Each unit includes a tubular battery case adapted to wedge into a handlebar arm. The open front end of the case projects from the arm and has an edge contact thereon that is connected to the base pole of the battery whose center pole is exposed at the front end of the case. Coupled to the front end of the case is a rotatable beacon assembly formed by a lens and a cylindrical mounting therefor within which is a light bulb whose center terminal engages the center pole of the battery and whose base terminal is connected to a movable switch contact that only engages the edge contact on the case when the rotatable assembly is caused to assume a particular angular position. The light bulb incorporates a thermostatic interrupter to effect intermittent energization thereof.

Abstract: A child's play ball constituted by an outer casing and an inner inflatable bladder. The outer casing is formed by contoured segments of high strength, non-stretchable fabric material stitched together to define, when the casing is fully expanded, a play ball of the desired shape and size, such as a football or soccer ball. The inner bladder is a conventional rubber balloon whose stem initially projects through an opening in the casing which is provided with a closure. The stem, after the balloon is inflated with air so that it conforms to the casing, is then tied to retain the air, the tied stem being concealed within the casing by the closure. The maximum safe diameter of the inflated balloon which is well below the diameter at which the balloon is close to its bursting point, is approximately equal to the maximum dimension of the expanded casing whereby the encased balloon has exceptional strength and the play ball may be subjected to rough handling.

Abstract: A three-dimensional play character provided with translucent eye and mouth elements, the character having fixedly mounted within its body a pre-recorded microcassette which is accessible through a body opening, the recorded sounds being appropriate to the personality of the character. Within the body are light guides that run from an optical inlet on the wall of the opening to the eye and mouth elements. Insertable through the opening to occupy an operative position with respect to the microcassette is a battery-powered playback module that serves to drive the microcassette, the module including a pick-up heat coupled to an audio amplifier whose audio signals are applied both to a loudspeaker which reproduces the recording and to a light bulb that is modulated by the signals to produce light pulses in synchronism with the reproduced sounds. The light bulb, when the module is in its operative position, lies adjacent the optical inlet whereby the light pulses are conveyed by the guides to the eye and mouth elements to impart animation thereto in synchronism with the sounds emitted by the character. The module is removable and is usable with a family of different characters each having a pre-recorded microcassette therein whose recording is appropriate only to that character.

Abstract: A dual-function pillow which in its normal mode serves as a comfortable bed rest or any other conventional purpose, and in its transformed mode functions as a plaything. The pillow is constituted by a soft and compressible inner bag and a removable outer case which covers the bag, the outer case having printed on its face a two-dimensional character in humanoid or animal-like form. Means such as drawstrings or elastic bands are provided to encircle the outer case and constrict the pillow along transverse lines displaced from opposite ends of the case. The placement of these lines is such relative to the character on the face of the pillow as to transform the two-dimensional character into a three-dimensional figure whose form is generally that of the character.

Abstract: An aroma generator that is rendered operative only when one turns on an electric light bulb in the room in which the generator is installed, the generator then functioning to discharge an air current into the room conveying an aromatic vapor which modifies the prevailing atmosphere. Included in the generator is a motor-driven fan that forces air through an air permeable cartridge containing an aroma supply, the motor being connected to a battery through a signal-responsive electronic relay. Applied to the relay is a signal derived from a light sensor which is adjacent the light source to intercept light rays therefrom. The arrangement is such that when the bulb is switched on, the signal from the sensor is then of sufficient magnitude to actuate the relay and thereby render the generator operative, whereby the operation of the aroma generator is coordinated with that of the bulb without any wire connection therebetween.

Abstract: A reversible fragrance emitting unit adapted to rest on a table or other flat surface in either an upright position in which the rate of fragrance emission is low, or in an upside down position in which the emission rate is high, the unit having the same attractive outward appearance in either state. The unit consists of a fenestrated open-ended shell having a decorative form whose inlet and outlet ends are attached to inlet and outlet boxes of like dimensions, both having bottom walls. The inlet box has an open top, whereas the outlet box is closed by a top wall to define an internal chamber which extends through the shell between the bottom wall of the inlet box and the top wall of the outlet box. The chamber contains a charge of fragrance-emitting pellets in an amount sufficient to almost fill the inlet box when the unit is placed in its upright position in which the inlet box rests on the table and the pellets are confined within the inlet box and therefore emit relatively little fragrance, the unit being effectively "off". When, however, the unit is reversed to occupy its upside down position in which the outlet box rests on the table, the pellets then occupy the shell and emit fragrance through the openings therein at a much greater rate and the unit is "on".

Abstract: An aroma generator for discharging aromatic vapors into the atmosphere. The generator is constituted by a replaceable aroma cube insertable into the well of a heater unit having a heater element positioned at the base of the well. The cube takes the form of an open-ended chimney having a shallow box coaxially supported therein at its lower end to define an outlet air passage in the spaces therebetween, the underside of the box being open to expose its interior to heat emitted by the base heater. Held within the box is a pad saturated with a volatile aromatic liquid, the box and the pad having a center hole therein to form an inlet air passage. Because of the pressure differential in the chimney created by the heated and expanding air at the lower end thereof, relatively cool air in the chimney is drawn downwardly through the inlet air passage and is heated by the base heater. This produces a convection stream of hot air that flows across the pad to volatilize the liquid, the resultant aromatic vapors being discharged into the atmosphere through the outlet passage.

Abstract: A disc-playing aroma generator whose appearance and function are analogous to those of a phono disc record player, the user when playing a selected aromatic disc enjoying an olfactory rather than an auditory experience. Each aromatic disc houses a supply of a liquid fragrance whereby when the disc is inserted in the player, an aromatic vapor is then discharged into the atmosphere. The disc is formed by a circular sheet of absorbent material impregnated with the liquid fragrance and sandwiched between a pair of annular plastic films which are peripherally joined to create a central zone exposing the impregnated sheet. In the player, heated air under positive pressure is forced through the central zone to volatilize the liquid to produce a vapor which is discharged through vents in the casing of the player. The aromatic disc is packaged in a transparent sleeve having circular spindle labels on both sides thereof which overlie the central zone to impart thereto the appearance of a conventional phono record and serving to identify the fragrance.

Abstract: An aroma-generating miniature capsule adhesively attachable to the surface of an incandescent light bulb to be activated by heat emanating therefrom. The capsule, preferably formed of a flexible synthetic plastic skin, includes a top wall having a vent hole therein and a base wall provided with a pressure-sensitive outer coating to adhere the capsule to the bulb. Supported within the internal cavity of the capsule is a pad of porous material having good wicking properties impregnated with a volatile aromatic liquid. The pad is at a position within the cavity adjacent the top wall to define therebelow an air chamber which when heated creates a positive air pressure forcing a stream of heated air through the pad to produce a vaporous scent. This is discharged into the atmosphere through the vent hole.
