Abstract: The embodiments disclosed herein relate to the construction of a search space for determining a motion vector for a current block of a picture in a video sequence. The search space construction is split into in two main stages, wherein a first and a second partial search space are respectively determined. Based on an initial estimate of a motion vector, a first search space is first constructed. A first and a second candidate motion of the first search space are identified according to a cost function. Based on the first and the second candidate motion vectors, a second search space is constructed. The motion vector for the current block is selected from the candidate motion vectors of the first search space and the second search space.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides apparatuses and methods for splitting an image into coding units. An image is divided into coding tree units (CTUs) which are hierarchically partitioned. Hierarchical partitioning includes multi-type partitioning such as binary tree or quad tree splitting. For CTUs completely within the image and CTUs on the boundary, respective multi-type partition depths are chosen. The present disclosure provides for multi-type partitioning flexibility in a boundary portion of the image.

Abstract: A method for constructing a most probable mode (MPM) list for prediction process corresponding to video block is provided. The method includes determining whether a left block of a current coding block is available, in response to determining that the left block of the current coding block is available, adding an intra prediction mode of the left block into an MPM list; determining whether an above block of the current coding block is available, in response to determining that the above block of the current coding block is available, adding an intra prediction mode of the above block into the MPM list; adding an offset to the prediction mode of the left block to obtain a new prediction mode; and adding the above-offset prediction mode into the MPM list when the above-offset prediction mode is not in the MPM list. The MPM list is used to improve coding efficiency.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to encoding and decoding video by employing texture coding. In particular, a texture region is identified within a video picture and a texture patch is determined for the texture region. Moreover, a first set of parameters is derived specifying weighting factors for reconstructing spectral coefficients of the texture region by fitting the texture region in a spectral domain to a first function of the texture patch, the first function being defined by the first set of parameters. The texture patch and the first set of parameters are then included into a bitstream which is output by an encoder and provided in this way to the decoder which reconstructs the texture based on the patch and the function applied to the patch.

Abstract: A texture region is identified within a video picture, and a texture patch is determined for the region. Clustering is performed to identify a texture region within the video image. The clustering is further refined. In particular, one or more brightness parameters of a polynomial is determined by fitting the polynomial to the identified texture region. In the identified texture region, samples are detected with a distance to the fitted polynomial exceeding a first threshold. A refined texture region is identified as the texture region excluding one or more of the detected samples. The refined texture region is encoded separately from portions of the video image not belonging to the refined texture region.

Abstract: A system and method for processing a video stream are provided. When coding or decoding a video stream a de-blocking filtering may be applied for reducing discontinuities caused by use of a block-based video coding. The de-blocking filtering is performed using a filter grid. The size of the filter grid is chosen adaptively based on the processing parameters. The adaptive size of the filtering grid is determined based on the number of samples used and modified in de-blocking filtering of an edge of a coding block. The filtering grid may be used both for vertical and horizontal edge filtering.
