Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to the field of picture processing. Especially, the embodiments are directed to improving the deblocking filter of an image coding device. During the deblocking, at most a number MA of sample values of the first coding block adjacent to the block edge are modified and at most a number MB of sample values of the second coding block adjacent to the block edge are modified; or at most a number MA of sample values of the second coding block adjacent to the block edge are modified and at most a number MB of sample values of the first coding block adjacent to the block edge are modified, MA≠MB.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides apparatuses and methods for splitting an image into coding units. An image is divided into coding tree units (CTUs) which are hierarchically partitioned. Hierarchical partitioning includes multi-type partitioning such as binary tree or quad tree splitting. For CTUs completely within the image and CTUs on the boundary, respective multi-type partition depths are chosen. The present disclosure provides for multi-type partitioning flexibility in a boundary portion of the image.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for image coding with boundary partitioning processing are disclosed. In image coding, and particularly in video coding, images are typically split into smaller blocks or units that are then processed. Effective splitting or partitioning has an important role in effective image coding. The apparatus and method use a particular boundary partitioning processing for improving splitting, which can be used in improving compression performance. The boundary partitioning reduces unnecessary partitioning on the frame boundary and reduces complexity of a forced partitioning procedure.

Abstract: An encoder for obtaining training signals and to train a codebook for vector quantization of a video sequence of subsequent frames is provided, each frame being subdivided into coding blocks. The encoder comprises a scalar quantization unit configured to obtain, for each coding block of one or more training frames of the video sequence, a scalar quantized signal from a prediction error, an entropy coding unit configured to entropy code, for each coding block of each training frame, the scalar quantized signal into an output signal, a data selection unit configured to select, from among the training frames, one or several coding blocks depending on a cost function of their respective output signal, and to obtain, for each selected coding block, a training signal derived from the prediction error of the selected coding block and configured to train the codebook for vector quantization of the video sequence.

Abstract: A system and method for processing a video stream are provided. When coding or decoding a video stream a de-blocking filtering may be applied for reducing discontinuities caused by use of a block-based video coding. The de-blocking filtering is performed using a filter grid. The size of the filter grid is chosen adaptively based on the processing parameters. The adaptive size of the filtering grid is determined based on the number of samples used and modified in de-blocking filtering of an edge of a coding block. The filtering grid may be used both for vertical and horizontal edge filtering.

Abstract: An apparatus and method determining a motion vector for a block, which relates to motion vector determination employing template matching or bilateral matching, are provided. At first, candidate motion vectors are obtained and are mapped to respective representatives (representative motion vectors). In particular, if the obtained candidate motion vectors point to fractional positions and thus, interpolation from the integer sample positions is required, the initial motion vector is rounded to a closest integer sample position. The rounded position is then used to define the search space for the template or bilateral matching to determine the best matching motion vector for the block (in other words, a refinement of an initial motion vector around which the candidate space is spanned). Finally, the mapping operation can be reverted in order to obtain a result in the original search space.

Abstract: A method for boundary partition of a current block is provided. The method includes obtaining a partition indicator from a received bitstream; determining whether the partition indicator indicates that the current block is to be split and whether the current block is a boundary block; and performing a non-inverse transform operation on an inside part of the current block when the partition indicator indicates that the current block is not to be split and the current block is a boundary block, wherein the inside part of the block is located within the picture. For the boundary block which is determined not to be split, a non-inverse transform operation is chosen. This avoids a normal inverse transform on the residuals of the inside part (within the picture) of the current block in the decoder, so number of blocks for the inverse transformation is decreased, and decoding complexity is thus reduced.
