    Abstract: A power operating system for opening and closing a vehicle liftgate has a pair of drive units supported on the vehicle frame and connected to the liftgate for opening and closing the liftgate. Each drive unit includes a bracket that is secured to the vehicle body for supporting several parts including a reversible electric motor, a gear train, a rack and a cradle that are mounted on the bracket. The electric motor drives the rack via an the output gear of the gear train that has an axis. The rack slides in the cradle which is pivotally mounted on bracket so that cradle pivots about the axis of the output gear to hold the teeth of the rack in engagement with the teeth of the output gear to accommodate rocking movement of rack as it moves from a retracted position to an extended position. An arcuate track that is fixed to the vehicle body, and an arcuate link slides in the arcuate track. The arcuate link has an inboard end that is pivotally connected to an end of the rack and an outboard end that is pivotally connected to the liftgate.

    Abstract: A door latch (10) with a cinching mechanism (16) having a manual override (18). The door latch (10) includes an enclosure (12) and a latching mechanism (14) disposed in the enclosure. The latching mechanism (12) has a fork bolt (20) moveable between an unlatched position, a secondary latched position, and a primary latched position. The cinching mechanism (16) has a cinching gear (24) that can drive the fork bolt (20) to the primary latched position. The cinching mechanism (16) also has a gear lever (30) to drive the cinching gear (24). A motor driven cable (34), in turn, drives the gear lever (30). A conduit (44) extends over part of the cable (34). The conduit (44) is attached to a conduit lever (46), which, in turn attaches to the enclosure (12). The manual override (18) includes a pivoting connection (50) that interconnects the conduit lever (46) and the enclosure (12) to allow the conduit lever and the conduit (44) to pivot with respect to the enclosure selectively between a fixed position and a loose position. The override (18) also includes a detent (52). The detent (52) can either engage the conduit lever (46) and retain it in a fixed position, or disengage the conduit lever to allow the conduit lever and the conduit (44) to pivot. If the conduit (44) is allowed to pivot, the latching mechanism (14) can unlatch even if the cinching mechanism (16) fails to operate after it drives the fork bolt (20) to the primary latched position.

    Abstract: A vehicle closure latch is provided which includes an actuator with a first wheel selectively reversibly powered to rotate along a first axis; a second wheel coaxial with the first wheel, the second wheel having a first face directed toward the first wheel; at least one arcuate slot formed on one of the wheels with a center of rotation generally co-terminus with the first axis, the slot having first and second ends spaced from one another and a pin connected on the other wheel that the arcuate slot is formed on, the pin being captured by the slot between the ends of the slot and being able to move therebetween; the second wheel further including a cam profile on a second face opposite the first face, the cam profile encapturing the stud of a manually operated locking lever, wherein rotation of the second wheel in a first circular direction will cause the manually operated locking lever to pivot moving the locking lever to the locking position and rotational movement of the second wheel in a second circular direction opposite the first circular direction will cause the manually operated locking to pivot moving the locking lever to the unlocked position, and wherein the manually operated locking lever can be moved between the locked and unlocked positions, without any substantial movement of the first wheel.
