    摘要: An elliptically polarizing plate comprising a retardation film having a film comprising a polymer which has, as its main chain, a polyol skeleton having a side chain substituted with at least one chemical group selected from the group consisting of an aromatic carbonyl group, an aryl-substituted lower alkylcarbonyl group, and an unsaturated aliphatic carbonyl group, the chemical group being bonded to an oxygen atom in the polyol skeleton side chain, and a polarizer stacked over the retardation film, wherein the polarizer is made of a coating film obtained by applying a dichromatic colorant. As the dichromatic colorant, an organic colorant represented by (chromogen)(SO3M)n wherein M represents a cation is used. The elliptically polarizing plate has a good visibility in the range of visible rays and can be made thin and light.

    摘要: A liquid crystal display of the invention comprises an in-plane switching liquid crystal panel containing a liquid crystal layer whose alignment orientation changes according to an electric field in parallel with a surface of a substrate; a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate disposed sandwiching the liquid crystal panel therebetween; a first optical film inserted between the first polarizing plate and the liquid crystal panel; and a second optical film inserted between the second polarizing plate and the liquid crystal panel, wherein the first optical film includes: a retardation film A1 having a relation of nz>nx≧ny; and a retardation film B having an in-plane retardation (Re) in the range of from 200 to 300 nm, a relation of nx>nz>ny and satisfying Nz coefficient in the range of 0.3 nx≧ny; and the slow axis of the retardation film B is in parallel with or perpendicular to the absorption axes of the first and second polarizing plates. The liquid crystal display has a high contrast ratio over a wide range.

    摘要: In a liquid-crystal display device, an optical path control layer is provided at least on an outer side of the back side substrate, and has a plurality of optical path changing slopes inclined at an inclination angle of from 35 to 48 degrees with respect to a reference plane of the back side substrate. The optical path control layer has a refractive index higher than that of a low-refractive-index transparent layer provided in the back side substrate. Another low-refractive-index transparent layer lower in refractive index than the transparent substrate may be provided in a visual side substrate. Light sources may be disposed on at least two side surfaces of the liquid-crystal display panel. Light sources may be disposed on side surfaces of the back side substrate and the visual side substrate and at least on side surfaces of the liquid-crystal display panel which are different from each other. Another optical path control layer may be provided also on an outer side of the visual side substrate.

    摘要: A reflection-transmission double type liquid-crystal display device has a transmission type liquid-crystal display panel including a liquid-crystal cell, at least one illuminator disposed on at least one side surface of the liquid-crystal display panel, an optical path changing sheet which has a refractive index exhibiting a refractive index difference of not higher than 0.15 from a refractive index of a nearest liquid-crystal cell substrate and is bonded onto a back side of the liquid-crystal display panel through an adhesive layer having a refractive index exhibiting a refractive index difference of not higher than 0.20 from the refractive index of the nearest liquid-crystal cell substrate, and a reflection layer disposed on a back side of the optical path changing sheet. The optical path changing sheet includes optical path changing slopes and flat surfaces. Each of the optical path changing slopes faces the illuminator at an inclination angle in a range of from 30 to 48 degrees with respect to a plane of the optical path changing sheet and being provided for reflecting incident light from the illuminator toward the visual side of the liquid-crystal display panel. Each of the flat surfaces is inclined at an inclination angle of not larger than 10 degrees with respect to the sheet plane, and a projected area of the flat surfaces on the sheet plane is not smaller than 10 times as large as a projected area of the optical path changing slopes.

    摘要: A polarizer having a polarizing element, and at least one transparent protective film constituted by two layers of retardation films with an in-plane retardation of 190 to 320 nm with respect to light having a wavelength of 550 nm is provided. The transparent protective film is bonded onto one of opposite surfaces of the polarizing element so that a slow axis of each of the retardation films is parallel with an absorption axis of the polarizing element. The two layers of retardation films are constituted by a combination of a retardation film with Nz of 0.8 to 0.95 and a retardation film with Nz of 0.55 to 0.7 in the condition of nx>ny and Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny) in which nx and ny are in-plane refractive indices of the retardation films respectively, and nz is a refractive index in a direction of thickness of each of the retardation films.
