A method of forming a color image comprising developing an imagewise exposed silver halide color photographic material with a developing solution containing an aromatic primary amine developing agent in the presence of at least one coupler represented by the following formula (I) or (II): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy group, an unsubstituted amino group, a substituted or unsubstituted alkylamino group, a substituted or unsubstituted arylamino group, or a substituted or unsubstituted N-alkylarylamino group; R.sub.2 represents a monovalent substituent; R.sub.3 represents a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are taken together to form a ring; Z represents an oxygen atom, an imino group, or a sulfur atom; and X represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent capable of being split off upon a coupling reaction with an oxidation product of an aromatic primary amine developing agent. The magneta color image forming coupler represented by formula (I) or (II) provides a magenta color image having high sensitivity and gradation as well as the hue of which is easily controllable. A silver halide color photographic material containing the magenta image forming coupler is also disclosed.

The compound may be used as a synthesis intermediate from which a yellow coupler can be synthesized in a simple manner. Using the compound, a yellow coupler can be readily produced on an industrial scale with the short process.
