Abstract: An aerosol-generating device is provided, including: a cavity including an upstream portion with an upstream opening and a downstream portion with a downstream opening; a mouthpiece configured to be retractable into the downstream portion of the cavity; and a sterilization radiation source configured for irradiating at least parts of the downstream portion of the cavity for sterilizing the mouthpiece, the cavity being configured to receive an aerosol-generating article through the upstream opening into the upstream portion, the cavity being further provided with a connection element slidably mounted within the cavity and configured to retract the mouthpiece in the cavity and to push the aerosol-generating article out of the cavity. An aerosol-generating system including the aerosol-generating device and an aerosol-generating article, and a method for operating the aerosol-generating system, are also provided.
