When detection of an abnormality in a fuel vapor treating system is executed, a vapor zone including a fuel tank and a canister is sealed. The sealed vapor zone is pressurized. Whether fuel vapor is leaking from the vapor zone is determined based on the pressure in the sealed vapor zone. A canister valve selectively connects a canister with and disconnects the canister from the atmosphere. During the abnormality detecting procedure, an electronic control unit (ECU) shuts the canister valve. After the abnormality detecting procedure is ended, the ECU sends a control signal having a predetermined frequency to the canister valve, thereby gradually increasing the opening size of the canister valve. Accordingly, the pressure in the vapor zone is gradually lowered to the atmospheric pressure. This prevents fuel vapor adsorbed by the canister from being released to the atmosphere.

A failure test apparatus for a fuel-vapor purging system for adsorbing fuel vapor in a fuel tank into a canister and for purging fuel to an intake system of an internal combustion engine as needed. The purging system has at least one valve. A first test unit provides a differential pressure between the inside and the outside of the fuel-vapor purging system, measures the internal pressure with the fuel-vapor purging system in an airtight condition, and determines whether a leak exists in the fuel-vapor purging system from the behavior of the internal pressure. The test by the first test unit involves a differential-pressure forming process of creating a differential pressure between the inside and the outside of the fuel-vapor purging system, a sealing process of making the fuel-vapor purging system airtight when the differential pressure exists, and a differential-pressure releasing process for releasing the differential pressure. In association with one or more of the processes, a second test unit measures the internal pressure of the fuel-vapor purging system to detect a failure in any valve actuated in one of the processes based on the behavior of the internal pressure.

A malfunction determining apparatus of an exhaust gas recirculation system can prevent an erroneous determination that an exhaust gas recirculating valve is normal when the valve has a cause of malfunctioning. The exhaust gas recirculating valve is provided between an exhaust passage and an intake passage of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle. An operation determining part determines whether the exhaust gas recirculating valve has been operated at least once. A malfunction determining part performs a determination as to whether the exhaust gas recirculation system is malfunctioning. The determination is performed after the exhaust gas recirculating valve has been operated at least once.
