This invention relates to safety bindings for skis of the kind having a front binding which consists of two spaced toe-clamps which grip the toe of the boot and which are mounted on outwardly pivotable arms.According to the invention, when these arms are locked in the closed position, they are capable of release in opposition to the pressure of a spring. The force of such spring acts in the direction opposite to the direction of ski movement. In response to a sudden rearward force on the ski, the two toe-clamps can be moved apart simultaneously laterally of the ski a distance greater than the width of the boot.

A heel gripping device for a ski binding comprises a housing attachable to the ski and carrying a slidable element which is urged forwardly by a spring to project from the housing and engage a groove in the heel of the ski boot to hold the same against the ski in a downhill skiing configuration. A rotatable cam is mounted in the housing and is turned by an external actuating handle to retract the slidable element and permit the boot to be lifted in cross-country skiing.

A safety ski binding particularly designed to hold the toe of a ski boot properly connected with a ski while automatically releasing the ski boot when required. The binding includes a pivot whose axis is perpendicular to the upper surface of the ski in at least one position of the pivot. A swing member is swingable about the pivot and carries a toe clamp for engaging the toe of a boot. A spring assembly coacts with the pivot and the swing member to yieldably resist swinging of the latter about the pivot axis from a central neutral position. The spring assembly acts in such a way as to increase the resistance to turning of the swing member from its neutral position only through a predetermined initial angular increment. When the swing member turns beyond the latter increment, the spring assembly does not provide any additional resistance to turning of the swing member.

An apparatus for holding a footwear heel to a snow travel aid is provided. The apparatus comprises a mountable base connected to a generally vertical post and an upper portion having at least one forward connector for connecting the upper portion to the heel. The upper portion is rotatable on the post between a downhill position and at least one touring position and comprises at least one part which travels over a prominence at a fixed location relative to the upper portion during rotation from the downhill position to the touring position. The at least one part becomes engageable with a depression adjacent the prominence when the upper portion is in the touring position to resist rotation from the touring position back to the downhill position. The post comprises a feature that provides clearance for the at least one part to travel over the prominence or which functions as the prominence and depression. Also provided are posts for use as a part in such an apparatus.
