The present invention relates generally to an illuminated lawn and garden sprinkler. More specifically, this disclosure relates to an, electrically independent, illuminated lawn and garden sprinkler, using a micro-generator for power and advanced circuitry, including a photoelectric sensor, for display control. Illuminated sprinklers are an aesthetic enhancement using light to interplay with the discharging water and highlighting landscaping. Illuminated sprinklers encourage nighttime watering, increasing watering efficiency and water conservation.

An apparatus for changing a length of a pipe, the pipe including first and second pipe portions each having an interior, includes a cylinder having a first end wall and an open end, the cylinder being connectable to the first pipe portion. The apparatus also includes a piston having a second end wall, the piston being receivable in slidable and sealable engagement with the cylinder, the piston being connectable to the second pipe portion, wherein the cylinder and the second end wall define a chamber physically isolated from the interiors of the first and second pipe portions, the chamber being adapted to receive a control fluid for displacing the piston relative to the cylinder to vary a distance between the first and second pipe portions while permitting fluid communication between the first and second pipe portions, the chamber including a cushioning region in communication with the chamber.

The invention relates to irrigation by means of sprinklers for agriculture, lawns, golf courses and other applications. More particularly, the invention provides a sprinkler arranged to distribute water evenly over a field area of almost any shape. Preferably the invention relates to a pop-up sprinkler thus, when not in use, i.e., when no water pressure is applied, the entire device is level or below ground surface. The invention comprises: a lower water inlet, an inner member, within an upper housing, suspended on a vertical axis within the lower water inlet. An inner member within the upper housing being free to revolve around a vertical axis and revolvably supporting; at least one nozzle assembly having at least one water inlet and an outlet jet and being supported on a horizontal axis. Means for variably tilting the nozzle assembly(ies) in a horizontal axis in accordance with the changing angular position of the nozzle around the central vertical axis when water pressure is introduced into the lower water inlet housing. And means for imparting a vertical axis rotary movement to the inner member part within the upper housing directly supporting the at least one nozzle assembly.

A primary extension assembly is coupled within the through passageway of the base cylinder and is positionable between collapsed and extended positions. The primary extension assembly comprises a primary extension cylinder having a first end fluidly communicable with a second end via a through passageway. A stop is coupled to the first end of the primary extension cylinder. An actuator cylinder is coupled within the primary extension cylinder. The actuator cylinder comprises a first end fluidly communicable with a second end via a through passageway. The second end of the actuator cylinder is coupled with the second end of the primary extension cylinder.

A sprinkler includes an outer case having an upper end and a tubular riser telescopically mounted in the outer case for extension and retraction from the upper end of the case. The riser has an upper portion with a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures sized to allow debris to be carried through the apertures with flowing water. A riser seal is positioned and configured to substantially prevent water from escaping between the riser and the outer case when the riser is extended. A drive assembly is mounted inside the riser and includes a drive shaft that is co-axially mounted at an upper end of the riser and rotates when pressurized water is supplied to the outer case. A cylindrical nozzle housing is co-axially coupled to the drive shaft and is rotatable relative to the riser. The nozzle housing is positioned and configured to define a gap between an outer cylindrical wall of the nozzle housing and a complementary outer cylindrical wall of the tubular riser. The apertures in the upper portion of the riser intersect the gap and are configured and sized to receive pressurized water below the riser seal when the riser is retracted.

A sprinkler includes a riser having an inlet end and an outlet end and a nozzle rotatably supported at the outlet end of the riser. The nozzle has a plurality of circumferentially spaced, radially extending stream forming channels. A gear drive is coupled for rotating the nozzle. A stationary arc plate has an upper surface adjacent a lower surface of the nozzle and includes a first aperture that directs water into terminal ends of the stream forming channels. A manually adjustable orifice plate is mounted in overlapping relationship with the stationary orifice plate. The adjustable orifice plate has a second aperture shaped and aligned with the first aperture so that manual rotation of the adjustable orifice plate increases or decreases an arc of an arc shaped water distribution pattern. A ratchet mechanism including radially deflectable tabs releasably locks the position of the adjustable orifice plate.

A nozzle turret for an irrigation sprinkler includes a body having a rotational axis and a nozzle socket extending transverse to the rotational axis. A nozzle is removably received in the socket. A sleeve in the body opens on a top side of the body and defines a bore that communicates with the socket. A nozzle retention screw with a shank having a lower male threaded segment is screwed into the bore of the sleeve from the top side of the body. The shank extends into the socket a sufficient depth to retain the nozzle in the socket. The screw has a head that abuts an upper end of the sleeve when the screw is fully screwed in a downward direction into the sleeve. The screw shank has an upper unthreaded segment with a predetermined longitudinal dimension selected relative to a longitudinal dimension of the bore to enable the screw to be unscrewed in an upward direction from the sleeve despite stripping of a segment of a female threaded portion of the bore.

A sprinkler head nozzle assembly in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention includes a housing including an inlet for pressurize water and an outlet downstream of the inlet, a valve member, operable to extend and reduce an arcuate opening at the outlet of the housing, wherein the size of the arcuate opening indicates the arc of coverage of the sprinkler head nozzle assembly and a rotating distributor, mounted on a central shaft extending through the housing and the valve member, and operable to deflect a flow of water from the arcuate opening out of the nozzle assembly.
Abstract:
A riser seal cartridge for an irrigation sprinkler. The cartridge is formed of a rigid self support shell, and a sealing member formed of a resilient material covering the shell in areas which provide the seal. The sealing member includes a first portion which seals the top end of the sprinkler body, a second portion which seals an outer surface of the riser, a third portion which connects the first and second portions, and a fourth portion extending from the third seal portion which provides a seal for the support shell lower end portion. The first seal portion provides a high pressure seal to prevent leakage when the riser is in a fully extended position; and the second seal portion provides a low pressure seal during pressure build-up as the riser is extending.
