A fixing device incorporated in an image recording apparatus has a heater 24 for fixing an image formed on a sheet 11 by heating a toner 12 constituting the image, and a thin endless belt 21 for carrying the sheet 11. The endless belt 21 is rotated by a drive roller 22 and is given tension by a tension roller 23. A tapered member 26a is located at an end of the tension roller 23 and a guide member 30 contacts with a side tapered surface of the tapered member. When the endless belt 21 skews, the tension roller 23 moves along its axis by a reaction force and inclines in a direction parallel to a tension direction of the tension roller 23 to compensate for the skew.

A system to support a moving photoreceptor belt in an electrophotographic printing machine while minimizing lateral forces applied thereon. Pairs of idler rolls are located in contact with the inner surface of the belt in an arrangement in which the axes of rotation of the idlers are skewed in substantially equal but opposite angles from a direction perpendicular to the direction of belt motion. As the resultant lateral forces between the belt and rolls act in a direction nearly parallel to the axes of rotation of the idlers, the opposing skew essentially cancels the side force of each pair of idlers which promotes good belt tracking. As the idlers are freely rotating, drag and tensioning forces on the belt are also minimized.

The imaging surface is transported along a predetermined path in a process direction of travel while being maintained in both lateral and skew alignment via a selectively controllable drive system for inducing differential or non-differential transport motion of the imaging surface. A control system is also provided for selectively operating the drive system to compensate for detected lateral or skew misalignment of the imaging surface.

If a conveyor belt creeps sideways, belt training idlers are used to return it to a central position. Conventionally the training idlers do this by pivoting about an axis normal to the conveyor belt surface (i.e. they "slew"). The slewing of the present training idlers however is also accompanied by a sideways tilting movement to increase the realigning influence of the idler. The combined movement of the idler is enabled by spherical bearing (10) which lines frame (4), carrying idler roller (5), to base frame (9). This bearing acts as a modified universal joint, with one degree-of-freedom removed by support rollers (11) attached to a shaft through the spherical bearing along axis (12) in the direction of belt travel on each end of the shaft. When respective servo roller (3) [alternatively pairs of servo rollers (13) may be used] is contacted by a misaligned belt edge it serves to slew the frame (4) to which it is attached about axis (6) passing through the bearing. At the same time a respective roller (7) on frame (4) is driven down an angularly adjustable inclined track (8) attached to base frame (9) so that the idler is tilted as well as slewed.

A control method and apparatus for tracking an endless belt. The tracking apparatus includes a roller and a belt steering roller. A span of the belt defined between the roller and the belt steering roller travels in a plane and both the roller and the belt steering roller are adapted for rotational movement about longitudinal axes perpendicular to the plane. The belt steering roller is also capable of a tilting movement through a midpoint of the belt steering roller in a soft tilt axis intersecting the longitudinal axis. A tilting mechanism including a solenoid and a spring controls movement of a yoke for tilting the steering roller about the soft tilt axis to either a positively tilted position relative to the plane or to a negatively tilted position relative to the plane. An optical sensor senses the lateral position of the belt and produces an electrical signal representing the lateral position. The electrical signal is analyzed and a first and a second time period are determined, these first and second time periods form a time duration ratio for keeping the steering roller at the negatively and positively tilted positions. A microprocessor control activates the tilting mechanism to move the steering roller to one of the two predetermined positions based on the electrical signal for the first time period. Subsequently, the tilting mechanism is activated to move to the other position after elapse of the first time period. The steering roller remains at the other position for the second time period.

A twist correction device for a pipe conveyor having an endless transfer belt whose at least part is rounded in a pipe shape enclosing therein a material to be transferred. The device includes a plurality of correction rollers obliquely inclined relative to the transfer direction of the transfer belt and in pressure contact with the outer circumferential surface of the pipe-shaped transfer belt to apply correcting force to the belt for correcting twisting of the belt. The device further includes two roller support frames supporting the plurality of correction rollers and pivotally connected to a stationary support frame rotatably about axes perpendicular to the transfer direction of the transfer belt. The device includes an angle adjusting device provided on the stationary support frame for adjusting rotated angles of the roller support frames about the axes, thereby correcting twisting of the pipe-shaped transfer belt. The angle adjusting device is manually driven or automatically power driven.

The inventive device includes a support shaft having a longitudinal axis with a locus that does not change, including when the shaft is positionally rotated about such axis. A collar is mounted on the shaft for supporting an idler pulley having an axis of rotation. An indexing plate is also mounted on the shaft for maintaining a selected position of the collar, the angular position of which is adjustable. An indexing surface is in position-affecting relationship to the collar and defines a plane oriented at an angle with respect to the shaft axis. This angle is adjustable for selecting the position of the collar. The device permits the locus of the axis of rotation of the idler pulley to be selected to maintain alignment of a belt with a driving pulley, thereby preventing such belt from becoming disengaged from the driving pulley.
