Abstract:
A high speed paper folding machine for cutting a continuously fed web of paper into sections and folding said sections is disclosed. The machine includes a rotating hollow drum on which the web is deposited and on which the cutting and folding operations are performed without transferring the web or the cut or folded sections off of the drum. The drum includes a knife for cutting the web. The knife preferably is situated within the drum interior and adapted to extend through elongated apertures defined on the drum outer surface. Grippers on the drum hold the web on the drum through the operation. At least one folding station is operably associated with the drum. At least one pack-off station can be provided for stacking the folded product in separate stacks.
Abstract:
A folder having at least one folding unit with at least two mutually cooperating product-carrying cylinders, the folder having further folding attachments, and devices for increasing cutting accuracy, includes retaining elements engageable with at least one material web for retaining the web, and a rotating support surface assigned to one of the product-carrying cylinders within a transfer region, the rotating support surface serving to support the web when it is engaged by the retaining elements.
Abstract:
Point needles in a collecting cylinder are driven in a two stage extension process to initially needle or pierce the leading edge of a product web being cut. Once the cut has been made, the needle tips are moved further radially outwardly from the cylinder to secure the cut edge. As the signatures are transferred to a folding cylinder, the needle points are retracted along a single stage retraction curve which is different from the path traveled during the two stage extension process.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for transverse folding of web segments to provide napkins, hankies, or the like, in which first and second folding rolls are equipped with vacuum ports selectively actuatable to provide a transverse fold, the second folding roll being operated at a surface speed slower than the first.
Abstract:
Apparatus for forming in a sheet a fold extending transversely of the direction of sheet travel therethrough is provided with a triad of cylinders rotating about parallel axes. The sheets to be folded are first engaged about the periphery of a first of said triad of cylinders with their trailing and leading edges engaged by releasable grippers. A folding blade located between said grippers on said first cylinder causes a portion of the sheet intermediate the leading and trailing end thereof to be engaged by a folding flap provided on a second of said triad of cylinders. The folding flap engages the sheet at an intermediate point thereon and draws the sheet off said first cylinder while the sheet ends are positively held in a controlled manner. The third of said triad of cylinders cooperates by engaging the leading end of said sheet as said sheet is drawn off said first cylinder by the second cylinder. Thus, the transverse fold is formed in the sheet while the trailing and leading ends of the sheet are supported to avoid the occurrence of distortions of the folded sheet.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for transverse folding of webs of discrete length to provide napkins, hankies, or the like, in which a first folding roll is equipped with a pair of vacuum ports selectively actuatable to provide a double transverse fold.
Abstract:
A collecting device, particular for cross folders of web-fed rotary printing presses in which the products are taken up by cam-controlled puncturing needles and are lifted off during the release from the collecting cylinder, and with each row of camcontrolled puncturing needles there is coordinated a counterrunning cam-controlled row of strippers.
