摘要: In a shoe and drum brake wherein the shoes can move circumferentially of the drum between first and second limit positions and are biased towards the first limit positions, there is provided for transmitting force from an actuator to the shoes a lever or hydraulic device capable of transmitting the force unequally to the shoes. The larger force urges the shoes towards their second limit positions while the smaller force urges the shoes towards their first limit positions. During forward rotation of the drum, the shoes remain in their first limit positions and can be applied radially to the drum by movement of the actuator. When the drum is rotating in the reverse direction, the larger force moves the shoes circumferentially of the drum so that the actuator fails to apply the shoes to the drum and establish a braking torque.

摘要: A drum brake assembly includes a pair of brake shoes which are carried by a backing plate and engageable with a hydraulic actuator. The hydraulic actuator is operable to move the pair of brake shoes from a rest position to a braking position. A strut extending between the pair of brake shoes cooperates with a parking arm to move the pair of brake shoes to the braking position during a parking brake application. A support assembly on the backing plate is disposed opposite the hydraulic actuator for the purpose of absorbing braking torque developed by the pair of brake shoes. The support assembly comprises a pair of slots and a lever. The lever is movable in response to movement of the parking arm to adjust the position of the pair of blocks relative to each other. In a first position the blocks are in abutment with the backing plate while in a second position the blocks are free to move a limited amount relative to the backing plate. Moreover, the lever imparts a separating force to the pair of brake shoes via the blocks during a parking brake application to expand the brake shoes radially. This expansion is in addition to the movement imparted to the brake shoes by the strut and parking arm.

摘要: A drum brake wherein a pair of brake shoes are held down, without departing from a backing plate, by means of a single shoe hold-down spring. The spring is made of a wire, being bent and wound symmetrically about an axis, and held by retainers secured to the backing plate, so as not to be substantially hampered from swinging about the axis; it is contacted to the pair of shoes at a pair of farthest distant symmetrical points from the axis. The contacting load at the pair of points with the shoes is naturally equalized or balanced, because the spring is not substantially hampered from swinging about the axis.

摘要: A drum brake of the inner shoe type has a self-adjusting device which comprises a push rod, one end of which cooperates with a first brake shoe, while the other end cooperates with a second brake shoe with the intermediary of an adjusting wedge, the position of which determines the effective length of the push rod. In the released state of the brake, the brake shoes abut the push rod-and-wedge assembly, whereby an air gap is defined between the brake lining and the drum. A clamping spring urges the push rod and the second brake shoe against the one and the other wedge flank. The wedge angle of the adjusting wedge is so selected that normally no shifting of the wedge occurs. The push rod has an abutting and displacing arrangement which--as soon as the brake shoe travel exceeds, during brake actuation, a basic structurally determined desired air gap--shifts the push rod against the force of the clamping spring and thus loosens the wedge. As a result, the wedge is advanced to a corresponding extent, thus increasing the effective length of the push rod-and-wedge assembly.

摘要: In an automatic adjuster for a shoe-drum brake in which a twopart strut of adjustable length extends between the shoes adjacent to their actuated ends one part of the strut is formed by a bell-crank lever pivoted on a pin having limited movement relative to the other part which carries a non-rotatable peripherally toothed stud, and one arm of the lever is engaged in a clearance opening in a web of a shoe while the other arm has an arcuate toothed edge resiliently urged into engagement with the stud.
