    摘要: A wheel brake mechanism on a trailer has a brake shoe support mounted for limited tangential movement with respect to the wheel axle but restrained against movement during forward movement of the trailer vehicle by an abutment mounted on the frame of the vehicle. An auxiliary rod linkage interconnects the brake shoe support to the service rod linkage which is operated during ordinary or service braking applications to apply an actuating force to the brake shoes of the trailer wheel brake mechanism. During rearward movement of the trailer vehicle the brake shoe support may move sufficiently to cause the auxiliary rod linkage to exert a counteracting force on the service rod linkage. A parking brake comprising a pivotally mounted operating lever has a locking lever thereon which locks the auxiliary rod linkage against movement when the operating lever is moved in the braking direction but which is unlocked from the auxiliary rod linkage when the operating lever is in the release position.

    摘要: An improved surge braking mechanism for trailer vehicles including a brake shoe carried on a lever plate by an articulated linkage system. The braking mechanism moves the lever plate to bring the brake shoe into braking engagement with a brake drum of the trailer vehicle in response to the forward inertia of the trailer vehicle during braking. When the inertia of the trailer vehicle is either neutral or rearward, the braking mechansim acts to take the brake shoe out of braking engagement with the brake drum. The articulated linkage system limits the movement of the brake shoe away from the brake drum during rearward movement of the trailer vehicle. Upon transitional motion of the brake shoe in response to forward movement of the trailer vehicle, the brake shoe is smoothly returned to its normal position ready for braking of such forward movement. Undesired temporary braking engagement of the brake shoe observed during such transitional movement in known surge braking mechanisms is thereby prevented.

    摘要: A mechanical overrunning braking system for trailers has main and auxiliary braking units which are mounted on the towed vehicle, at least two wheel brakes on the trailer, and cables or rods connecting the spreading levers or toggle leverages of the wheel brakes with the two units. Each wheel brake has two brake shoes one of which acts as a primary shoe in response to operation of one of the braking units while the brake drum rotates forwardly and the other of which acts as a primary shoe in response to operation of one of the braking units while the drum rotates rearwardly. A package of prestressed dished springs can be deformed only in response to operation of the auxiliary braking unit to thereby force the other shoe into frictional engagement with the drum. The characteristic curve of the springs is degressive or regressive, at least in the region corresponding to stressing of such springs beyond the initial stress. A force limiting device is installed between the main braking unit and the cables or rods to prevent the main braking unit from furnishing to the cables or drums a force which is sufficient to effect a deformation of springs to the extent which is necessary to move the other shoe into engagement with the brake drum.

    摘要: This invention relates to a drum brake with two internal expanding brake shoes pivoted at substantially diametrically opposite axes. It incorporates the negative feedback of the brake shoe sliding friction forces to oppose the applied hydraulic brake actuating forces for the purpose of reducing variation in brake torque due to random or uncontrolled variations in the coefficient of friction between brake shoes and brake drum. The required brake shoe friction force feedback is accomplished by eliminating the normally leading brake shoe with its undesirable lock-up prone positive feedback and replacing it with a brake shoe pivoted about an axis diametrically opposite the pivot axis of the normally trailing brake shoe. The location of the shoe pivots is chosen to establish the required feedback magnitude by use of lever ratios whose adequacy is verified by the force equilibrium equations of the brake system. The resulting unconventional location of the brake shoe pivots permits the sliding friction forces between shoes and drum at both shoes to be applied as forces acting in a direction opposite the applied brake actuating hydraulic forces for forward vehicle motion. This preferred location of the brake shoe pivots also results in uniform wear of the brake shoe lining without the necessity for starwheel turnbuckle wear compensation as in conventional drum brakes. Devices are also provided for preventing brake lock-up during reverse operation due to the positive feedback of friction forces at both brake shoes for that direction of motion.

    摘要: In a shoe and drum brake wherein the shoes can move circumferentially of the drum between first and second limit positions and are biased towards the first limit positions, there is provided for transmitting force from an actuator to the shoes a lever or hydraulic device capable of transmitting the force unequally to the shoes. The larger force urges the shoes towards their second limit positions while the smaller force urges the shoes towards their first limit positions. During forward rotation of the drum, the shoes remain in their first limit positions and can be applied radially to the drum by movement of the actuator. When the drum is rotating in the reverse direction, the larger force moves the shoes circumferentially of the drum so that the actuator fails to apply the shoes to the drum and establish a braking torque.

This is achieved by having a pivoted lever acting between the one ends of two shoes remote from the ends between which the brake actuator is located. The shoes act on the lever at different effective radii and the forces applied by the shoes to the lever hold it in a first position during forward rotation, thus allowing normal braking torque, and a second position during reverse rotation which allows the ends of the shoes acted on by the actuator to move apart thus allowing a limitation of the reverse braking torque by limiting the stroke of the actuator.

    摘要: A caravan has a drum brake fitted to each wheel and a brake operating mechanism which includes a hitch bar for coupling to a tow bar on a tractor vehicle. Limited movement of the hitch bar relative to the caravan in either direction accompanies movement of the tractor vehicle in the same direction relative to the caravan and is transmitted by a linkage to operating rods associated with each brake. A handbrake lever is arranged to impart a greater movement to the operating rods than can be imparted by the hitch bar. Each brake is arranged to exert a greater braking effort for rotation of the drum in the forwards direction than for rotation of the drum in the other direction. One of the brake shoes is mounted on a carrier. A brake shoe expander acts between one end of the carrier and the other brake shoe and is operated by the respective operating rod. A fixed abutment is positioned between the other end of the carrier and the other shoe, and may include a spring for engagement by the carrier. The shoe expander may be of the kind which is mounted for sliding movement on the brake backplate so that thrust due to drum drag on the shoe carried by the carrier during forwards rotation of the drum is transmitted through the expander to the other brake shoe.
