Film (13) in a film cassette (15) is connected to a take-up reel (19) in a film transport mechanism (11) by means of mating connectors (20,30) attached to leaders (27,29) on the cassette film (13) and on the take-up reel (19). The connectors (20,30) are retained in contoured slots (41,51) on the cassette (15) and on the film transport mechanism (19) so that when the cassette (15) is loaded onto the transport mechanism (19), the connectors (20,30) will be in alignment. By arranging the connectors (20,30) for connection and disconnection in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the film (13), an efficient connection can be effected and the connection remains stable during the operation of the film transport mechanism (11). In order to avoid the connectors (20,30) causing a distortion in the contour in the film (13) after winding onto the take-up reel (19), the leader (29) attached to the take-up reel (19) is provided with apertures (57) which, when the film (13) is wound around the take-up reel (19), are in alignment with the mated connectors (20,30).The use of the mating connectors (20,30) establishes a fixed relationship in the spacing between the film leader (29) on the take-up reel and an "initial" position on the film (13). If the film (13) is controlled in its position by a sprocketed capstan (35), the use of the mating connectors (20,30) reduces the possibility of positional error occurring as a result of an inaccuracy in the positioning of the film (13) when loading.

A photographic camera is adapted for use with a film cartridge having a tongue portion from which a curled film leader projects. The projecting leader comprises a relatively short full width section adjacent the tongue portion and a relatively long reduced width section separated from the tongue portion by the full width section. Integral means is provided in a loading chamber of the camera body for supporting the cartridge at its throat portion to locate the full width section of the leader away from the camera body during axial insertion of the cartridge initially into the loading chamber. This will prevent the forward longitudinal edge of the full width section of the leader from jamming against the camera body to interfere with film loading. A straightening member along the camera body contacts the forward longitudinal edge of the reduced width section of the leader to uncurl that section in response to continued axial insertion of the cartridge into the loading chamber.

A particular type camera requiring the exposed film to receive special handling at the photofinisher is adapted for use with a film cartridge which includes a film spool having an elongate coaxial hole open at one end of the spool. A plug is supported in the coaxial hole in the spool for movement along the hole from a predetermined location relatively close to the open end of the spool to another location further into the hole. When the cartridge is loaded in the camera, a plunger member of the camera is received in the coaxial hole to move the plug from the predetermined location to the other location. The camera of this invention includes a parking mechanism that ensures a visual exposure indicator of an APS film cassette is in the parked position prior to removing the film cassette from the camera. The camera may include a rotatable wheel that rotates in order to move the film between a film cassette compartment, a film exposing area and a film spool. In a preferred embodiment, the parking mechanism includes a pin that engages the rotatable wheel after the film has been rewound into the film cassette and the wheel has been rotated sufficient distance to ensure that the visual exposure indicator moves to the parked position. When the pin engages the rotatable wheel, the pin prevents further rotation of the rotatable wheel. This indicates to the camera user that the visual exposure indicator is in the park position. The wheel may include a cam slot into which the pin travels as the film is being rewound into the film cassette. The cam slot may include an end that contacts the pin to prevent further rotation of the wheel when the visual exposure indicator is in the park position.
