A new class of herbicidal compounds consisting of 1-alkyl- and 1,1-dialkyl-3-(4-substituted-3-amino-5-isothiazolyl)ureas and N-(4-substituted-3-amino-5-isothiazolyl)-alkanamides, in which the 4-substituent consists of cyano and carbamoyl, exhibits preemergence and postemergence herbicidal activity, controlling effectively the growth of a wide spectrum of grassy and broad-leaved plant species. The synthesis of members of this class is described in detail, and the utility of representative compounds is exemplified.

C.) and [5-(3-methylureido)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylthio]-acetic acid isopropylester (b.p. 143.degree. C.) in which R is hydrogen or alkyl. The compounds are useful as the active agents or one of the active agents in herbicidal compositions.

Herbicidal compositions consisting of an active herbicidal compound and an antidote therefor and the methods of use of the herbicide compositions are described herein. The antidote compound corresponds to the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 can be selected from the group consisting of alkyl, haloalkyl, halogen, isocyanate, alkenylamino, halophenylamino, phenyl, substituted phenyl wherein said substituents can be selected from alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, nitro, amino and haloalkylaminosulfonyl; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 can be the same or different and can be selected from hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkynoxy, haloalkoxycarbonyl, alkynoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, haloalkylthio, diacetonitrilocarbamyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl wherein said substituents can be selected from alkoxy, halogen, hydroxy, nitro and carbamoyl, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 taken together form the ring structure alkyloxazolidyl.

Novel compounds useful for the control of pests such as fungi and bacteria have the formula ##STR1## wherein n is 0, 1 or 2; R is a C.sub.1-12 alkylene; C.sub.2- 12 alkenylene; C.sub.2- 12 alkynylene; arylene or aralkylene radical; X is hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy, acyl, acyloxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfonyl, cyano, thiocyanato, alkylsulfonyloxy or amino group; and m is 1-3, inclusive; with the proviso that when n is 0, the -CN groups are in the 1- and 3-positions and X is hydrogen, R is not a methylene radical.

Acyclic and alicyclic N-substituted halo-2-pyrrolidinones having the formula ##STR1## in which Q is oxygen or sulfur; R is lower alkyl, haloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, benzyl and chlorobenzyl; X is hydrogen or chlorine, Y is chlorine or bromine and Z is chlorine or bromine, provided that when R is allyl, Y and Z are each chlorine or bromine, and provided that when R is cyclohexyl, X is other than chlorine. The compounds of this invention are prepared by a novel process and are useful as herbicides.

A fungicidal composition for agricultural and horticultural use comprising a suitable carrier and fungicidally effective amount of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-2,3-dichloromaleimide per part of at least 1 compound selected from the group consisting of a compound expressed by the formula: ##STR1## (where M represents manganese or zinc, and when M is manganese, zinc may coordinate in the molecules), N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxyimide and 8-oxyquinoline copper. The composition has been found to possess unusually high anti-fungal activity in protecting against various plant disease.

2-(Alkylhalophenylimino)-1,3-dithiolanes are ectoparasiticidal agents. The compounds, of which 2-(2-methyl-4-chlorophenylimino)-1,3-dithiolane is a typical example, are obtained by condensation of a salt of the corresponding N-phenyldithiocarbamic acid and a vic-dihaloalkane.
