An electrophotographic process employs an electrophotographic photosensitive member of a basic construction in which a photoconductive layer and a transparent insulator layer are sequentially laminated on the surface of a conductive supporter. The process in one preferred embodiment comprises a first step of providing a primary charge uniformly from the surface side of the transparent insulator layer, a second step of performing a secondary corona charging during an imagewise exposure by applying an a.c. voltage in which the firing angle of a negative half wave is controlled in phase to be within a phase angle corresponding to a lower voltage than the firing angle so that the positive discharge period may be longer than the negative one during one period, and a third step of forming an electrostatic latent image on the transparent insulator layer by applying a uniform exposure.

A novel method and apparatus for electrophotography is disclosed which enables selection the mode of image formation among positive-positive, negative-positive and combinations thereof without any need of changing the polarity of developing toner. The present invention is made on the basis of a known electrophotographic system in which a photosensitive member composed of essentially an electrically conductive substrate, a photoconductive substance layer and an insulating surface layer and which comprises the steps of charging the insulating surface layer, image-wise exposing it to light so as to form a first image almost simultaneously with or some time after the charging step, subjecting it to corona discharge with nearly simultaneous image-wise exposure so as to form a second image and uniformly exposing the whole surface of the photosensitive medium to light so as to form an electrostatic latent image corresponding to a composite image resulting from the first and second images. According to the invention the first and second images to be formed are identical with each other and either one of the two images is selectively exposed to obtain the desired image.

Electrophotographic medium which comprises a transparent substrate, ohmic layer and coating of photoconductive material, all of which form a modulating structure for the radiant energy that is adapted to be projected through the substrate; a dielectric layer (storage medium) intimately bonded to the surface of the photoconductive coating and a conductive electrode in intimate contact with the dielectric layer. The structure is used by connecting a d.c. voltage across the outer electrode and the ohmic layer and projecting the image onto the electrophotographic medium from the bottom surface of the substrate. The charge image appears on the dielectric layer. The charge image is read out with an electronic beam or toned and fixed or transferred. During use the electrode is brought into intimate contact with the dielectric layer and removed after forming the charge image in order to enable the medium to be processed further without the electrode. The interface between the dielectric layer and electrode preferably is liquid, at least when originally formed, and may comprise a conductive fluid or organic or inorganic material or a low melting point metal that is easily stripped off the dielectric surface.

A persistent internal polarization (PIP) electrophotography printing or copying system uniquely adapted to be used in combination with alternating current wherein a pair of electrodes, each including a plurality of elements disposed in spaced array alternating with each other in the same plane, are utilized in combination with a PIP layer such that an alternating current electric field may be simultaneously applied to the PIP layer while permitting light radiation to reach the PIP layer. In the specific practice, the pair of electrodes are positioned on top of or embedded in the surface of the PIP layer which is to be toned; that is, the top surface.
