The first retardation plate, the second retardation plate, and the polarizer are arranged in this order from a side of the object to a side of the image pickup element. The slow axis direction or the fast axis direction of the second retardation plate tilts to the slow axis direction or the fast axis direction of the first retardation plate. The setter sets the retardation of the second retardation plate according to the polarization component of the light from the object.

A method for lowering dark current in an image sensor pixel, the method includes the steps of providing a photosensitive area for receiving incident light which is converted into a charge; providing a gate for transferring charge from the photosensitive area; wherein the gate is held at a voltage which will accumulate majority carriers at a semiconductor-dielectric interface during integration for the photosensitive area. Alternatively, a potentail profile can be provided under the gate to drain the dark current away from the photogeneration diffusion.

In a novel process for the reversible or irreversible production of an image by the imagewise action of energy on a recording layer, resulting in a pattern of surface charges which corresponds to the imagewise action of the energy, on the surface of the recording layer, the recording layer used is one which contains or consists of an organic material which solidifies in glassy form, is nonphotoconductive or only slightly photoconductive and has permanent dipoles, whereinthe pattern of surface charges is produced, without or almost without formation of free charge carriers, by reversible imagewise orientation of some or all of the permanent dipoles present in the recording layer, with the aid of an electric field applied imagewise.The novel process is advantageously carried out using a novel apparatus which comprises a suitable recording element, apparatus for the imagewise action of an electric field on the recording layer of the recording element and a counter-electrode which is in direct, non-frictional contact with the recording layer and can be removed again therefrom. The pattern of surface charges which is produced by the novel process can be treated with liquid or solid toners. The resulting toner image can then either be fixed on the recording layer or transferred from the recording layer to another surface, after which the pattern of surface charges can be deleted by uniform action of energy. Thereafter, a further image can be produced. In this way, it is possible to produce photocopies without the high voltage sources required in the conventional electrophotographic processes having to be used.

The present invention relates to a method and a device for instant recording of light images while observing said light images which makes use of a three layer photosensitive plate having photopermeability and serving as a rear screen so as to enable projected light images to be visible, and composed of a high insulating layer, a photosensitive layer having the P.I.P. character, and a conductive layer; the exposure for uniformly irradiating the overall surface of the photosensitive plate is given from one face thereof and simultaneously the voltage of an optional polarity is impressed on the photosensitive plate to give an overall uniform charge thereto, and light images are irradiated onto the photosensitive plate and thus, while observing the light images effected on the rear screen, the voltage of opposite polarity to said polarity is impressed at any time desired to give the exposure of light images and thereby recording of light images is effected onto said photosensitive plate.

This invention provides a process for making image overlay through the steps constituting an electrophotographic process, and also an apparatus adapted for conducting such process. The process, based on an electrophotographic process utilizing a three-layered photosensitive member having an insulating cover layer, comprising exposing the photosensitive member to a first image-forming irradiation to be overlaid substantially simultaneously with or subsequent to a charging on the surface of the insulating layer, then exposing the photosensitive member to a second image-forming irradiation to be overlaid substantially simultaneously with an AC or DC corona discharge given to the photosensitive member, and subsequently giving a uniform exposure to the surface of said photosensitive member thereby obtaining an electrophotographic overlay image of the first and second irradiations.

In a method of electrophotography comprising the steps of applying a first electric field across a photosensitive element including a photoconductive layer manifesting persisting internal polarization and a highly insulative layer integrally bonded to one side of the photoconductive layer for depositing a charge of one polarity on the surface of the highly insulative layer, and applying a second electric field across the photosensitive element for depositing a charge of the opposite polarity concurrently with projection of a light image upon the photoconductive layer whereby to form a latent image on the surface of the highly insulative layer corresponding to the light image, a third electric field is applied across the photosensitive element for depositing a charge of the same polarity as the charge deposited by the second electric field for improving the contrast and then the latent image is developed to provide a visible image.
