The invention basically comprises systems and methods relating to the field of electrostatics and is concerned with multicolor electrostatic reproduction, printing or constituting on coated and uncoated print receiving media with multilayer apertured elements or screens carrying charge distributions in accordance with selected color separation patterns. Ions accelerated through the apertures of the multilayer element pass therethrough under modulation control dictated by the color separation pattern, thereby forming a modulated ion stream having a cross-sectional density pattern corresponding to the color separation pattern. Electrostatic latent images are formed with modulated ion streams and are developed in various ways. In one embodiment, a modulated ion stream is accelerated by an electrostatic field through a mist of uncharged liquid toner particles which are charged by collision with the ions and then accelerated by the ion accelerated field toward and onto the print receiving medium, which may be ordinary uncoated paper. In another embodiment, the modulated ion pattern is projected onto a dielectric surface in the electrostatic accelerating field to form an undeveloped latent electrostatic color separation image thereupon. The dielectric surface may be a dielectric coating on the print receiving medium itself. In another embodiment, the dielectric surface may be formed on an intermediate transfer drum and the print receiving medium laid over the image on the drum and the image transferred and fixed to the print receiving medium with heat and pressure.

An electrophotographic process employs an electrophotographic photosensitive member of a basic construction in which a photoconductive layer and a transparent insulator layer are sequentially laminated on the surface of a conductive supporter. The process in one preferred embodiment comprises a first step of providing a primary charge uniformly from the surface side of the transparent insulator layer, a second step of performing a secondary corona charging during an imagewise exposure by applying an a.c. voltage in which the firing angle of a negative half wave is controlled in phase to be within a phase angle corresponding to a lower voltage than the firing angle so that the positive discharge period may be longer than the negative one during one period, and a third step of forming an electrostatic latent image on the transparent insulator layer by applying a uniform exposure.

A composite apertured screen composed of two conductive layers separated by an insulative layer and having an insulative layer on one outer surface. Means for establishing oppositely polarized fields across the inner insulative layer and across the outer insulative layer. One of the fields is selectively discharged to control the passage of toner particles through the apertures in the screen.

Disclosed is an imaging method useful in facsimile transmission. The method involves passing an electrical current through a receiving member of a solid state persistent electrochromic material uniformly distributed on the surface of a substrate. The substrate comprises a surface material on a ground plane. The surface material is a material which becomes more conductive upon being heated or wetted and is returned to its original state of resistivity upon cooling or drying. The surface material is heated or wetted to increase its conductivity and thereby reduce its resistance to a level less than or about equal to that of the electrochromic material whereupon an electrical current is passed through the electrochromic material in imagewise configuration to thereby form an image. Upon formation of the image, it is fixed by cooling or drying the surface material.

A method of forming an image on an electrophotographic film material is described. This involves a contact printing technique and comprises the following steps:(a) placing an image-bearing master in contact with the film;(b) exposing the film to light through the image-bearing master, the exposure being substantially greater than the minimum necessary to render conductive the photo-conductive layer of the electrophotographic film;(c) applying a substantially uniform charge to the surface of the film in the dark immediately after exposure;(d) leaving the film in the dark for a short time so as to allow the charge to migrate selectively; and(e) then developing the image.

This invention provides a process for making image overlay through the steps constituting an electrophotographic process, and also an apparatus adapted for conducting such process. The process, based on an electrophotographic process utilizing a three-layered photosensitive member having an insulating cover layer, comprising exposing the photosensitive member to a first image-forming irradiation to be overlaid substantially simultaneously with or subsequent to a charging on the surface of the insulating layer, then exposing the photosensitive member to a second image-forming irradiation to be overlaid substantially simultaneously with an AC or DC corona discharge given to the photosensitive member, and subsequently giving a uniform exposure to the surface of said photosensitive member thereby obtaining an electrophotographic overlay image of the first and second irradiations.

Via mesh apertures which have been freed from the charge by neutralization, the ion flow is irradiated for a time far longer than the above-said short time on an insulating recording substrate, to obtain thereon an electrostatic latent image having an amplified charge distribution.

Those portions are filled in with a charge of different potential, for example, a charge of polarity opposite to that of the original charge. The charged member is imagewise exposed and developed with two toners selectively attractive to the different charge potentials.
