A computer-implemented method teaches a user to evaluate a gemstone, such as a cut diamond. The method includes providing a computer system connected to an apparatus capable of capturing an image of a gemstone. The computer system is arranged to process a received image of a gemstone to determine one or more optical properties of the gemstone. In one aspect, the method presents on a display of the computer system a series of pre-stored screens comprising a graphical representation how the cut of a gemstone affects its light handling ability, and a user interface screen. The user interface screen allows the user to control the operation of the apparatus to measure the one or more optical properties of a particular gemstone provided to the apparatus, to view an image of the gemstone measured, and to view representations of the measured one or more optical properties.

A block model kit for representing validly constructed ionic compounds is provided. A valid ionic compound (formula unit) constructed with the block model kit is represented by a cuboid shape having six faces and eight corners and no more than two ionic types represented by blocks having ionic coding.

Children and adults are often seen collecting shells at the beach. Most don't know the name of the shell or anything about it. There's a need to create interest and education about seashells. There is literature which identifies seashells but nothing in the form of a game which would spark that interest.I've invented a seashell game geared for specific geographic locations that identifies indigenous seashells. The game consists of a plastic board with several indentations for specific shells to be placed into. A picture of that shell, its name and interesting information is printed next to the appropriate indentation. The object of the game is for players to fill each indentation with the proper shell within a time limit. The game provides a fun way to learn about seashells and occupy one's time while at the beach. Once filled, the game can be displayed in home, school or office.

A simple chemical modeling kit meets these needs and can be used by chemistry students, especially beginning students, to understand spatial relationships of atoms within molecules and to comprehend the shapes of molecules. The kit can comprise a plurality of rigid rods of the same length, width, and thickness, which can be manipulated to illustrate chemical structures. The structural formulas produced by the use of the kit can be described as abbreviated structural formulas.

A game that teaches the structures of atoms on the periodic table, molecules and ions. Teaches the concepts of ions, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction and the fundamentals of organic chemistry. The game includes a board having atoms, molecules and ions on the perimeter. In the center of the board are the periodic table, electronegativity table, a buzzer experiment representing an electrochemical cell, and table of organic nomenclature. Players are required to identify the entity on the perimeter randomly by the roll of dice and to answer questions from two levels of playing cards representing fundamental and advance.

An NMR teaching method and apparatus incorporating pieces representative of chemical fragments. Each piece has the number of sides corresponding to the number of bonds present around the central atom. Bonds to hydrogen are curved while bonding sides are flat. The presence of concavities and convex tabs on the bonding sides indicates bonding of the respective piece to a mating piece that causes splitting of the NMR peak. The shape of concavities on each piece is indicative of the chemical fragment of the respective piece while the shape of the convex tab of the respective piece is indicative of the chemical fragment of the mating piece. First and second bonding indicators can be used to replace the convex tabs. When presented with a spectrum, a student user can select the necessary pieces using data from the spectrum. Once selected, the student user can then assemble the pieces to determine the identity of the unknown molecule in the NMR spectrum.
