摘要: A magnetic switch assembly for hearing devices designed for remote activation by the user is highly miniaturized with a self-contained latching mechanism. The switch is activated and deactivated by the user via a hand-held magnet placed in proximity to the hearing device. The switch assembly includes a miniature reed switch and a miniature latching magnet affixed directly to one of the reeds or the associated lead wire. Direct attachment minimizes the air gap between the latching magnet and a reed thus enabling latching with only an extremely small magnet. The latching magnet produces a magnetic field of adequate strength to hold the reeds together in electrical contact after the air gap between the reeds is closed by the user's placement of the external hand-held magnet in proximity thereto. But the latching magnet's field is of inadequate strength for unaided closure of the air gap between the reeds. Consequently, once the reeds are closed the latching magnet prevents separation thereof until the reeds are exposed to an external magnetic field of opposite polarity and sufficient strength to overcome the field produced by the latching magnet.

摘要: Embodiments of the invention provide a canal hearing device and method in which the device is implemented with a mode of operation that provides acoustic transparency as well as a power-saving function, permitting the user to wear the device in the ear canal during periods of sleep or inactivity without substantial loss of normal unaided response. The transparent mode has an in-situ acoustic transfer function that compensates for the insertion loss caused by the presence of a hearing device in the ear canal. While the device is in this transparent mode, its acoustic transfer function gives the user a perception of unaided hearing, as though the device were removed, when it is actually being worn continuously in the ear canal. Current drain of the device is significantly reduced as the transparent mode serves to shut off or reduce bias currents of at least one circuit element within device circuitry.

摘要: A semi-permanent hearing device is disclosed which is adapted to be completely positioned within the ear canal of an individual for long-term use. The device comprises a sealing retainer substantially positioned in the bony region of the ear canal and a core assembly including a receiver assembly coaxially positioned within the sealing retainer. When the device is inserted into its completely-in-the-canal position, the core assembly extends from the sealing retainer to the cartilaginous region of the ear canal in a non-occluding fashion, thereby minimizing interference with hair and earwax production present in the cartilaginous region. In a preferred embodiment of the device, the core assembly comprises a battery assembly conforming substantially to the shape and dimensions of the battery enclosed within the assembly. A connector in the form of a thin ribbon film provides electrical and flexible mechanical connectivity between the receiver assembly, the centrally positioned battery assembly, and a microphone assembly positioned in the cartilaginous region. The disclosed hearing device is characterized by the absence of a unitary enclosure or a main housing, in contrast to the enclosure or housing which typically encompasses the battery along with other components in prior art hearing device designs.

摘要: A battery assembly is constructed of an elongated plastic shell irregularly shaped to fit optimally in anatomical cavities, particularly ear canals. The battery assembly relies structurally on a thin plastic shell which is designed to be inexpensively formed in a variety of complex shapes, thus offering superior volumetric utilization and energy capacity when compared with conventional metal button cell designs. In preferred embodiments, the shell is domed to distribute axial stresses so that it can be thin and still provide sufficient strength to avoid breakage in an extended wear environment despite its plastic composition. A preferred embodiment of a hearing device incorporating the battery assembly is disposable, to be discarded upon depletion of the electrical energy of the battery assembly.

摘要: The present invention provides an extremely space efficient battery enclosure and battery replacement methods for miniature hearing devices that are deeply and entirely positioned within the ear canal of an individual. The battery enclosure is a thin encapsulation that is formed or fitted directly over the battery thus substantially assuming the shape of the encapsulated battery. The battery enclosure, containing mostly the battery, is fitted concentrically within the narrow cavity of the ear canal with the long axis of the enclosure and the battery therein positioned along the long axis of the oval ear canal. In one embodiment of the invention, the enclosure is disposable and is elastically expandable to fit over the battery during its replacement. In another embodiment, the battery enclosure is coated over the battery with protruding contacts forming a battery assembly ready for electrical connection to a miniature canal hearing device.

摘要: A device to be worn in the ear of a subject provides a direct vibrational drive to the tympanic membrane through a vibrationally conductive assembly which couples vibrations from a vibratory transducer positioned within the ear canal proximal to the tympanic membrane. In one embodiment of the invention, the device is a hearing aid positioned inconspicuously deep within the ear canal. The vibrationally conductive assembly is removably attached to the umbo area of the tympanic membrane. The vibrationally conductive assembly is designed to conduct vibrations in the audible frequency range while absorbing static forces caused by device placement and ear canal movement attributable to jaw movements of the wearer, including speaking, eating, drinking, chewing, yawning, and so forth. The unique coupling characteristics of the vibrationally conductive assembly allow for a highly efficient transfer of vibrations in the audible frequency range to the tympanic membrane without exerting damaging forces on the tympanic membrane. The energy efficiency and non-occlusive design features of a hearing aid embodiment of the invention allow for long term use within the ear canal.

摘要: A hearing evaluation and hearing aid fitting system provides a fully immersive three-dimensional acoustic environment to evaluate unaided, simulated aided, and aided hearing function of an individual. Digital filtering of one or more signal sources representing speech and other audiologically significant stimuli according to selected models and digitally controlled signal processing parameters, including audio sources, spatializing coordinates, acoustic boundaries, signals representing one or more simulated hearing aids, and individualized body/external ear transfer functions synthesizes a simulated acoustic condition for presentation to a hearing-impaired person for objective and subjective hearing evaluation via an intra-canal prosthesis that is positioned in the ear canal, and that incorporates a microphone probe to measure in-the-ear-canal responses at a common reference point near the tympanic membrane during unaided, simulated aided, and aided hearing evaluation, thus providing measurements that are directly correlated across all phases of hearing assessment during the fitting process of a hearing aid. A virtual electroacoustic audiometer computes the electroacoustic parameters of a hearing aid based on the results of unaided audiometric evaluation and reference measurements that include the individual's acoustic responses near the tympanic membrane to acoustic stimuli in three-dimensional acoustic space. The system then synthesizes acoustic signals reflecting the combined selection of audio signal model, spatialization model, acoustic boundaries model, as well as computed hearing aid model in the case of simulated aided condition.

摘要: Various embodiments provide a flexible joint for extended wear hearing devices. One embodiment provides a flexible joint for a hearing device comprising a compliant tube having a lateral and a medial end, a pivotal portion and a lumen. The hearing device can include a CIC hearing aid positioned in the bony portion of the ear canal. The tube ends are configured to be coupled to lateral and medial device assemblies. The tube allows the lateral assembly to advance the medial assembly into the bony portion of the ear canal and have the lateral and medial assemblies conform to the shape of the ear canal via pivotal movement. The tube also acoustically decouples the two assemblies. The pivotal portion can comprise a necked portion or otherwise have decreased stiffness relative to other tube portions. The tube can be shaped to fit over and retain one or both assemblies.

摘要: Embodiments of the invention provide a protective cap assembly for a CIC hearing aid. The assembly comprises a perforated cap configured to be mounted over the lateral end of the hearing aid to protect the hearing aid from contaminants. At a least a portion of the cap includes a protective coating and a plurality of perforations. The placement and size of the perforations can be configured to provide sufficient aeration and drainage to reduce a relative humidity of the cap interior when the hearing aid is positioned in the ear canal. The perforations also operate as sound conduction channels for conducting sound to the cap interior. The perforations have a minimum size wherein a single perforation provides sufficient acoustic transmittance to a hearing aid component such that a hearing aid performance parameter is not substantially adversely affected. They can also be configured to provide splash protection for the cap interior.
