The present invention provides a collision avoidance manager for use with single-port memories. In one embodiment, the collision avoidance manager includes a memory structuring unit configured to provide a memory arrangement of the single-port memories having upper and lower memory banks arranged into half-memory portions. Additionally, the collision avoidance manager also includes a write memory alignment unit coupled to the memory structuring unit and configured to provide double-data writing to the memory arrangement based on memory collision avoidance. In a preferred embodiment, the collision avoidance manager also includes a read memory alignment unit coupled to the memory structuring unit and configured to provide double-data reading from the memory arrangement while maintaining the memory collision avoidance.

The interference cancellation (IC) system (500) includes a plurality of IC units, for which IC is applied. Each IC unit has its spread spectrum code generator, delay devices, correlators or matched filters (MF), spreading circuits and subtracting and adding devices. The IC process in accordance with the invention includes using a bank of MF to despread the received signal at every time instant corresponding to every identified multipath of every user's transmitted signal. Based on the despread signals, an initial decision for the present information symbol of every user can be made using a single-user receiver such as, for example, the conventional Rake receiver or an equalizer. Based on the initial decisions, IC regenerates the multipath signals for each user using timed versions of the spread spectrum code, the delays of the multipaths, and the corresponding channel medium estimates. By adding the regenerated signal estimates for the multipaths of all users, an estimate of the received signal at the input of the receiver prior to despreading can be reconstructed. Each IC unit despreads the regenerated received signal using timed versions of the corresponding spread spectrum code for each multipath delay. The result is subsequently subtracted from the initial despread signal and, to avoid removing the desired user path component, the reconstructed, interference-free, desired despread signal path is also added. The above IC process may be repeated several times (e.g., using several IC stages). Performing interference cancellation after despreading the regenerated estimate of the received signal leads to substantially smaller complexity than the prior art approach where the interference cancellation occurs prior to dispreading.

The bit detector (130) is also operable to deactivate a subset of the compressors (40 and 50) when the bit detector (130) determines that the first encoder input is in the reduced precision range (28). The switch (134) is coupled to a specified one of the compressors (42). The switch (134) is operable to redirect the path of one of the outputs for the specified compressor (42) such that the subset of the compressors (40 and 50) is removed from the path when the bit detector (130) determines that the first encoder input is in the reduced precision range (28).

A line monitoring mechanism (102) is provided which monitors the PCM data flowing over a digital backplane (60) as well as requests from a subscriber for an increased data rate connection. A micro-controller (104) can be provided to adjust the bandwidth of the filter (74) and cause it to enter “data” mode.

A method and a system for performing memory-based convolutional interleaving are disclosed. According to the disclosed method, delay lines (DL) are paired with one another within rows of a memory, where the pairing is effected so that the sum of the delay of the paired delay lines is constant over the rows. Both in transmission and in receipt of the interleaved data packets, one or more data packets are read from the oldest location of one of the paired delay lines, with one or more data packets from a received vector being written into this delay line; this reading and writing is repeated for each of the rows of the memory, advancing in a first direction. The process of reading and writing is then repeated for the other delay line in each of the rows of the memory, advancing in the opposite direction. The pairing of the delay lines (DL) in each row of the memory permits efficient implementation of convolutional interleaving, with a minimum of overhead processing required. The system may be implemented into a digital signal processor or other programmable logic device, such as may be used in a digital subscriber line modem.
