Method and apparatus for transmission of information in multiple access communication system is claim. Information using incremental redundancy is transmitted. A determination is made as to whether reverse link performance drops below a predetermined threshold. Determination of reverse link performance may be done in variety of ways, including use of a filter percentage of ACK erasures, measured error rates on the reverse link control channel, reverse link data channel error rates, and other methods. Upon determination of channel degradation, the access point can decide whether to ignore messages sent from the access terminal to instruct the access terminal to cease transmission.

The disclosed embodiments provide for methods and systems for selecting sectors for handoff in a communication system. According to one aspect, the method includes monitoring an indicia of transmit power on a plurality of RL control channels directed to a plurality of sectors, and selecting one of the sectors as a candidate for a RL handoff. The disclosed embodiments also provide for methods and systems for indicating a selected serving sector for handoff in a communication system. According to one aspect, the method includes sending a first signal to a first sector to indicate the first sector as a serving sector for a forward-link handoff, and sending a second signal to a second sector to indicate the second sector as a serving sector for a reverse-link handoff.

Method and apparatus for transmission of information in multiple access communication system is described. Information from a plurality of access terminals is received. Alternatively, an access terminal determines what information needs to be sent to the access point. A determination is made as to whether sufficient resources, such as time, power level, or channels, are available to send an indication of acknowledgment. If sufficient resources are not available at the given time, the transmission of an indication of acknowledgment is delayed until sufficient resources are available.

To transmit signaling, a base station obtains signaling (e.g., ACKs) for a group of channels used for data transmission and selected from a set of channels having constraints on usage. The base station compresses the signaling based on the channel constraints and obtains at least one message. If multiple messages are to be sent, then the assigned channels are partitioned into multiple subgroups, and the signaling for the channels in each subgroup is compressed to obtain a message for that subgroup. Each message is encoded at a spectral efficiency and transmitted at a power level selected for the message. A CRC value is appended to the message(s) for error detection. To receive the signaling, a terminal checks a received message with the appended CRC, decodes the message if the CRC passes, decompresses the decoded message based on the channel constraints, and extracts the signaling for an assigned channel.

Techniques for adjusting transmit power to mitigate both intra-sector interference to a serving base station and inter-sector interference to neighbor base stations are described. The amount of inter-sector interference that a terminal may cause may be roughly estimated based on the total interference observed by each neighbor base station, channel gains for the serving and neighbor base stations, and the current transmit power level. The transmit power may be decreased if high interference is observed by a neighbor base station and increased otherwise. The transmit power may be adjusted by a larger amount and/or more frequently if the terminal is located closer to the neighbor base station observing high interference and/or if the current transmit power level is higher, and vice versa. The intra-sector interference is maintained within an acceptable level by limiting a received SNR for the terminal to be within a range of allowable SNRs.

Techniques for performing erasure detection and power control for a transmission without error detection coding are described. For erasure detection, a transmitter transmits codewords via a wireless channel. A receiver computes a metric for each received codeword, compares the computed metric against an erasure threshold, and declares the received codeword to be “erased” or “non-erased”. The receiver dynamically adjusts the transmit power based on whether the codewords met the erasure threshold or not.
