When interference fringes of a reference light beam and a signal light beam, for example, of spherical waves are multiple recorded in accordance with a shift multiple recording method in a hologram medium, every time a hologram train to be produced successively by shift multiplex recording the interference fringes in the hologram medium is changed, the incidence angle at which the reference light beam enters the hologram medium is changed to a different value so that a predetermined condition may be satisfied. Then, a next track is recorded using the reference light beam.

The present invention provides a hologram apparatus for recording an interference fringe of a signal beam and a reference beam having a speckle pattern in a recording area of a hologram recording material. The hologram apparatus includes a speckle pattern generating unit for generating the speckle pattern so that the speckle pattern is different in form in the track direction and the cross-track direction of the recording area. With this configuration, it is possible to perform recording under an increased tolerance in the cross-track direction while securing the shift selectivity necessary in the track direction, and, hence, to easily and stably perform the tracking servo at the time of reproduction.

A hologram recording medium is disclosed which can prevent sensitization of a region thereof other than a data recording region thereby to prevent deterioration of a characteristic of the hologram recording medium. The hologram recording medium includes partition members for partitioning a recording material. Upon recording, unnecessary light generated when signal light and reference light enter the recording material is blocked from propagating in the recording material by the partition members and cannot advance into adjacent partitions. Therefore, unnecessary sensitization of the recording material by the unnecessary light can be prevented, and particularly, decrease of the recording capacity can be prevented. Consequently, the performance of a hologram recording and reproduction apparatus which adopts, for example, a multiplex recording system can be exhibited fully.

An optical disc having pits shorter in length than 0.40 .mu.m, with the ratio of the width of the shortest pit to that of the longest pit being not less than 0.8, is formed by forming a master disc by light exposure using a light source having a wavelength not shorter than 350 nm. By taking advantage of the fact that the pit width A looking from the reflective film 20 of the optical disc is deceased to be smaller on forming the reflective film 20 than the pit width B looking from the disc substrate 10 by a value equal to the film thickness, a row of pits, generally broader than the pit width optimum when looking from the side oft the disc substrate 10, is formed on light exposure on the master disc using the laser light having a wavelength not smaller than 350 nm. The reflective film 20 is formed on the row of pits transcribed from the master disc to the disc substrate 10 to provide a pit width which minimizes the inter-pit interference or jitter of the playback RF signals. The signals are read out from the side of the reflective film 20, that is from the side of the light-transmitting layer 30, instead of from the light-transmitting layer 30.

A master optical disc recording apparatus in need of only little maintenance and allowing easy optical axis adjustment despite its simplified construction. The master optical disc recording apparatus outputs an outgoing light having a converted wavelength ranging from 0.3 to 0.36 .mu.m by a non-linear optical process of a non-linear optical element enclosed within a laser light generating portion 1. The outgoing light is modulated by a light modulator 3 in accordance with recording information from outside to produce an exposing light which is converged by a recording lens 4 on the master optical disc 7 coated with a photosensitive material. The master optical disc 7, kept in rotation, is scanned with light from the recording lens 4 for writing the recording information. The recording lens 4 includes an automatic focusing mechanism including a bi-acid actuator 5 for servo adjustment.
