摘要: An optically active 2-fluoro-1-alkanol compound represented by the formula (Ia): ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group having 1-16 carbon atoms, and C* is an asymmetric carbon atom; and an optically active compound derived from the fluoroalkanol and represented by the formula (Ib): ##STR2## wherein R and C* are the same as above, m is 1 or 2, n is 0 or 1, and A is a releasable substituent. Because of the fluorine atom directly attached to an asymmetric carbon atom, these compounds are particularly effective in increasing a spontaneous polarization, improving a electric field responsive characteristic of a liquid crystal composition, and controlling the liquid crystal state.

摘要: Orientation of a liquid crystal is controlled by first forming a phase boundary of the liquid crystal between a monoaxially anisotropic phase where the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in one direction and a higher temperature phase between a pair of base plates, transforming a part of the higher temperature phase adjacent to the phase boundary under cooling into the monoaxially anisotropic phase where liquid crystal molecules are aligned in parallel with the liquid crystal molecules in the already formed monoaxially anisotropic phase, and successively causing the phase transformation in the direction perpendicular to the phase boundary.

摘要: An optical modulation device comprises a liquid crystal having bistability between a pair of parallel base plates oppositely spaced from each other. A plurality of structural members having side walls are arranged at a substantially equal interval between the pair of parallel base plates so as to be in contact with at least one of them. Further, side walls of the plurality of structural members are treated for horizontal orientation in parallel with the extending direction of the structural members, and have a wall effect for orienting liquid crystal molecules in the direction of the horizontal orientation treatment.

摘要: A driving method for an optical modulation device comprising matrix picture elements each formed at intersecting points of scanning lines and data lines between which a bistable optical modulation material represented by a ferroelectric liquid crsytal is interposed. The driving method comprises an erasure step of applying a voltage signal orienting the optical modulation material to the first stable state between the scanning and data lines, at all or a part of the matrix picture elements, and a writing step of sequentially applying a scanning selection signal to the scanning lines and applying an information orientation signal orienting the optical modulation material to the second stable state to the data lines in phase with the scanning selection signal.

摘要: An optical modulation apparatus has a matrix electrode arrangement comprising scanning electrodes and signal electrodes oppositely spaced from the scanning electrodes. Scanning signals are selectively applied sequentially and periodically to the scanning electrodes and information signals are selectively applied to the signal electrodes in synchronism with the scanning signals to effect optical modulation of an optical modulation material showing a first stable state and a second stable state with respect to an electric field applied thereto interposed between the scanning and signal electrodes. Before or after an information signal is applied to a selected signal electrode in synchronism with a scanning signal applied to a selected scanning electrode, an auxiliary signal different from the information signal is applied to the selected signal electrode in synchronism with the scanning signal, and an amplitude of a writing voltage applied to an intersection of the selected scanning electrode and the selected signal electrode is two or more times that of a first non-writing voltage applied to an intersection of a non-selected scanning electrode and the selected signal electrode. The amplitudes of the writing voltage and the first non-writing voltage are respectively determined with respect to a reference voltage determined as a difference between a voltage applied to a signal electrode receiving no data signal, and a voltage applied to the non-selected scanning electrode.
