摘要: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that proactively monitors a disk drive to detect an impending disk drive failure. During operation, the system obtains a time-varying electrical signal which is generated by the spindle rotation during operation of the disk drive. Next, the system extracts one or more inferential parameters associated with the spindle rotation from the time-varying electrical signal using a phase-sensitive detection. The system then performs proactive fault detection on the inferential parameters to detect an impending failure of the disk drive.

摘要: A system that records performance parameters from a computer system. During operation, the system periodically monitors performance parameters from the computer system and records the monitored performance parameters in a first storage space. Next, the system recurrently compresses the recorded performance parameters. This involves: (1) compressing the recorded performance parameters from the first storage space; (2) if insufficient space is available in a second storage space which is used to store compressed performance parameters, further compressing data in the second storage space to make room for the compressed performance parameters from the first storage space; and (3) storing the compressed performance parameters from the first storage space in the second storage space.

摘要: Some embodiments of the present invention provide a system that controls a device that generates vibrations in a computer system. During operation, a critical vibration frequency is determined for the computer system. Next, a keep-out zone is generated based on the critical vibration frequency, wherein the keep-out zone specifies a range of frequencies to be avoided. Then, the device is controlled based on the keep-out zone to reduce vibrations generated by the device in the keep-out zone.

摘要: One embodiment provides a system that mitigates vibrations caused by cooling fans in a computer system. More specifically, the system includes a cooling fan mechanically coupled to the chassis of the computer system, wherein vibrations generated by the cooling fan are coupled to the chassis. The system also includes an actuation mechanism that creates a relative displacement between the cooling fan and the chassis when a control signal is applied to the actuation mechanism. The system additionally includes a detection mechanism which detects the relative displacement and generates a feedback signal which represents the relative displacement. The system further includes a control signal generation mechanism which converts the feedback signal into the control signal, which is subsequently applied to the actuation mechanism. When the control signal is applied to the actuation mechanism, the relative displacement between the cooling fan and the chassis vibrationally decouples the cooling fan from the chassis.

摘要: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that systematically monitors and records performance information in a computer system. During operation, the system periodically measures a number of performance parameters in the computer system. The system then stores data representing values for the measured performance parameters in a long-term storage space. Next, the system recurrently compresses data stored in the long-term storage space, thereby allowing additional data representing newly collected performance information to be stored in the long-term storage space.

摘要: A system that facilitates high-sensitivity detection of anomalous signals in systems with low-resolution sensors. During system operation, a low-resolution sensor monitors a signal within the system. The system periodically polls the low-resolution sensor in a burst mode to obtain a plurality of measurements of the signal within a specified short time interval, wherein the measurements are spread across multiple quantizing bins. The system then determines a mean value for the plurality of measurements. The system repeats the steps of polling the low-resolution sensor and determining the mean value to create a time-series of mean values. This time-series of mean values is subsequently analyzed to determine whether the signal is anomalous.
