摘要： A method and system for producing a data storage system for transferring data between a host computer/server and a bank of disk drives through a system interface. The system interface has a plurality of first directors, a plurality of second directors, and a global memory. The method includes: providing a backplane having slots adapted to have plugged therein a plurality of printed circuit board. The printed circuit boards include: a plurality of first director boards having the first directors; a plurality of second printed circuit boards having the second directors; a plurality of memory printed circuit boards providing the global memory; a plurality of dummy first director boards having first jumpers; a plurality of dummy second director boards having second jumpers; a plurality of dummy memory boards having third jumpers. The method includes wiring the backplane to effect a connection among the first, second and third jumpers to interconnect the first plurality of director to the host computer/server, the plurality of second plurality of directors to the bank of disk drives and the global memory to the first plurality of directors and to the second plurality of director. The method and system allows the same wired backplane to be used with systems having a different number of memory and director boards and still enable dual-write and redundancy to the global memory.

摘要： A data storage system for transferring data between a host computer/server and a bank of disk drives through a system interface. The system interface includes: a plurality of first directors coupled to the host computer/server; a plurality of second directors coupled to the bank of disk drives; a cache memory; and a data transfer section coupled to the plurality of first directors, the second directors, and the cache memory. A messaging network is coupled to the plurality of first directors and the plurality of second directors. The first and second directors control data transfer between the host computer and the bank of disk drives in response to messages passing between the directors through the messaging network as such data passes through the memory via the data transfer section. A service processing network is provided for interfacing a plurality of service processing units to the plurality of first and second directors through a plurality of redundant communication channels. With such arrangement, because the service processor is being more involved in the functionality operation of the system, a pair of redundant service processors is provided. This thereby improves the reliability of the system including those system functions controlled by the service processor.

摘要： A rotor having a longitudinal axis of rotation and including an outer surface adjacent a screen surface. The rotor also includes a plurality of sets of radially extending, relative to the rotor axis, adjacent vane members attached to the rotor surface, each set including at least four adjacent vane members with equally spaced apart and parallel trailing edges ending in a common plane. The two outermost vane members have leading edges forward of the two most inside vane members, with the leading edges forward of the two most inside vane members being angled toward its next adjacent vane. The height of the two innermost vane members is about half of the height of the two outermost vane members. Each of the outermost vane members is angled relative to the circumferential direction of travel of the rotor by each of the outermost having vane members with a leading edge that is angled relative to its trailing edge. Each of the vane members has a leading edge forming an acute angle relative to the surface of the rotor and has a top edge with the same radius of curvature as the screen. The plurality of sets of vane members are spaced out throughout a screening chamber defined between the rotor surface and the screen in the direction of the rotor axis. The rotor outer surface does not have any longitudinally extending lifting bodies that produce pressure pulses throughout the screening chamber.

A block of data to be written to a location on a persistent storage device is exclusive OR'd (XOR'd) with the block of data currently stored at the location on the device. The result of the XOR operation is examined for differences between the block of data currently stored in the location and the block of data to be written to the location. If the result of the XOR operation indicates that there is no difference between the block of data currently in the location and the block of data to be written to the location, additional I/O operations are avoided.

摘要： An automatic self-protecting hypodermic needle assembly comprising a hypodermic syringe having a housing, a moveable plunger in the housing, a medicant chamber formed between the housing and the plunger, and a hollow needle extending from the housing in communication with the medicant chamber. A needle guard assembly is attached to the syringe housing and includes a guard housing adjacent the needle, a protective cap removably attached to the guard housing and an aperture through which the needle extends. A propellant is located in the guard housing in communication with the protective cap. When activated by an activating element, the propellant expands from a liquid to a gas, applies a pressure to the protective cap, and drives the protective cap along the length of the needle until the cap extends beyond the tip of the needle and the needle tip becomes embedded in the protective cap. Control means are provided under the operation of the medical attendant using the hypodermic syringe to automatically activate the propellant upon completion of the use of the syringe, and to embed the needle tip into the protective cap.
