Abstract: A method for underground cable localization by fast time series template matching and distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) includes: providing the DFOS system including a length of optical sensor fiber; a DFOS interrogator in optical communication with the optical sensor fiber, said DFOS interrogator configured to generate optical pulses, introduce the generated pulses into the length of optical sensor fiber, and receive backscattered signals from the length of the optical sensor fiber; and an intelligent analyzer configured to analyze DFOS data received by the DFOS interrogator and determine from the backscattered signals, vibrational activity occurring at locations along the length of the optical sensor fiber; deploying a programmable vibration generator to a field location proximate to the length of optical sensor fiber; transmitting to the programmable vibration generator a unique vibration pattern to be generated by the vibration generator; and operating the programmable vibration generator to generate the unique vibration pattern transmitted; and operating the DFOS system and collecting/analyzing the determined vibrational activity to further determine vibrational activity indicative of the unique vibration pattern generated by the vibration generator.

Abstract: Systems, and methods for automatically determining false transformer humming when using DFOS systems and methods to determine such humming along with machine learning approach(es) to identify the false transformer humming signal(s) that are transferred to a utility pole without a transformer from a working transformer on another utility pole. Advantageously, our inventive systems and methods employ a customized signal processing workflow to process raw data collected from the DFOS. Our employs a binary classifier that can automatically identify a transformer humming signal from a utility pole with a transformer and simultaneously identify the false humming signal from a utility pole without a transformer.

Abstract: Physimetric-based data security for coded distributed temperature sensing (DTS) in which physimetric information is extracted from a coded-DTS interrogator which is unique for each interrogator at each operating run time—and used to reconstruct a final temperature determination from DTS data. The physimetric information includes coded-DTS pulse code and coded-DTS pulse profile information as a key to permit secure sharing with authorized users. The pulse code and pulse profile information are encrypted and made available to an authorized user. The authorized user can then decrypt the pulse code and pulse profile information and subsequently use this key information (pulse profile and pulse code files) to retrieve temperature information from for example, a remote computer providing a continuous raw data feed—without being susceptible to eavesdropping. The pulse profile and pulse code files permit reconstruction of temperature from DTS continuous raw data feed which have no meaningful informational value to an eavesdropper who has no access to the unencrypted pulse profile and pulse code information.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe distributed optical fiber sensing for smart city applications in which distributed optical fiber sensing is integrated with a surveillance system into a single system such that the distributed sensing system may detect an event of interest and the surveillance system including cameras may be reoriented in response to verify and/or examine and/or acquire video of the event. Of particular advantage such distributed fiber sensing may include distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for vibrational sensing and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) for temperature sensing. The integrated system employs shared optical fiber transport for the distributed sensing and the surveillance.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe systems, methods and structures employing optical fiber sensing to monitor highway/roadway/street conditions (i.e., potholes, pavement cracks, etc.) in real-time, continuously, and while the highway/roadway/street remains in operation (in-service monitoring). Systems, methods, and structures according to aspects of the present disclosure may employ machine learning (ML) algorithms including neural networks to provide and or report on highway conditions so monitored/sensed. Of further advantage, systems, methods, and structures for optical fiber sensing for highway maintenance may operate in real-time, continuously, long-term, in-service, and may employ existing telecommunications optical cables without additional deployment cost(s) or disruption of telecommunications traffic.
