    摘要: Method and apparatus for obtaining quantitative velocity profile measurements and for displaying the same are disclosed. From such velocity measurements, instantaneous volume flow within a vessel across which the measurements are obtained is calculated. In one operating mode, a real-time display of quantitative velocity profiles is provided together with a scrolling display of a plurality of total instantaneous volume flow measurements. In another operating mode, velocity profiles obtained at corresponding points in successive cardiac cycles are averaged to obtain a plurality of average velocity profiles which are selectively displayed under operator control. In this mode of operation, a fixed display of total instantaneous volume flow measurements obtained over a period of time which includes at least one cardiac cycle is provided. A movable pointer adjacent the display of total instantaneous volume flow values and under operator control is provided to identify the point in the cardiac cycle selected for display of an associated velocity profile. Means for calculating volume flow over a cardiac cycle, and for numerically displaying said average also is provided. Depth control means control both depth and gain functions of the pulsed Doppler system.

    摘要: An ultrasonic transducer system for use with tissue is shown, which system includes a container of liquid acoustic coupling medium within which focused transducer means are located. Focusing of the transducer means may be effected acoustically, as by use of an acoustic lens, and/or electronically, as by use of a transducer array. The liquid medium container is closed at one end by a rigid acoustically transparent window, or diaphragm, for acoustically coupling to the skin and underlying tissue of the subject under investigation. The material of the liquid acoustic coupling medium is selected so that the velocity of propagation of acoustic waves therein is substantially less than the velocity of the acoustic waves within the tissue under investigation. By using a low speed-of-sound coupling medium a shorter propagation path may be employed than is required by prior art transducer arrangements in which the speed-of-sound in the tissue and coupling fluid is substantially the same. Operation in either scanning or non-scanning modes is contemplated, and scanning, when employed, may be effected mechanically or electronically. In the sector scanning mode, the system may be operated in a manner such that the angular sector swept out by the focused beam in the tissue exceeds that in the low speed-of-sound liquid coupling medium as a result of refraction at the window interfaces.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for pulsed ultrasonic imaging of a section of the interior of an object from reflections by internal discontinuities of recurrent transmitted pulses of ultrasonic energy, are provided. There is included a transducer array comprising a plurality of adjacent transducer elements for converting echo signals received from discontinuities within the object to equivalent electrical signals. Range gated signal processing means are provided for processing electrical signals from the transducer array reflected from discontinuities within any one of a plurality of range zones within the section to be imaged to provided range gated signals representative of segments of lines within the section to be imaged. The signal processing means includes electronic receiver beam focusing and scanning means for focusing the transducer array at the range zone at which the signals are range gated and for scanning the same. Visual display means for visual display of the line segment signals are provided for visual display of the entire section to be imaged. The signal processing means may include digital scan converter means for temporary storage of received signals for display thereof at a conventional TV monitor. Different numbers of transducer elements are employed for beam forming at the different range zones; a maximum number of adjacent transducer elements being used for operation at the zone farthest from the transducer array, and decreasing numbers being used for zones nearer the array. The electronic beam focusing means includes a plurality of fixed delay means, at least some of which are employed for focusing at a plurality of range zones thereby minimizing the total number required for operation of the system.

    摘要: Composite acoustic lens assemblies which are adapted for use in a fluid medium and utilized for forming acoustic images with incident acoustic waves or focusing incident acoustic waves are constructed utilizing two or more lens elements with a fluid filler medium contained therebetween. In order to reduce the radius of curvature of the lens elements to such an extent that mode conversion at liquid/solid interfaces is substantially eliminated while providing the required image or focusing, the materials of the lens medium and the liquid medium between the lens elements are selected so that the velocity of propagation of acoustic waves in the medium, at least on one side of the composite acoustic lens is intermediate the velocity of propagation of acoustic waves in the media of the lens elements and the fluid filler. In a preferred embodiment, lens elements are selected so that the velocity of propagation of acoustic waves therein is greater than the velocity of propagation of the acoustic waves in the wave transmitting medium surrounding the lens assembly and the lens filler medium is selected so that the velocity of propagation of acoustic waves is less than their velocity in the surrounding wave transmitting medium.

    摘要: An ultrasonic transducer comprising a linear array of piezoelectric elements for converting a single line from a compressional acoustic image field to electrical impulses which, in turn, provide a means for converting the incident compressional image field to a visual representation. In order to match the configuration of the acoustic image field, the array of piezoelectric elements, in a preferred embodiment, has the configuration of an arc, that is, the array is arranged in a straight line in one plane and in an arc in a plane orthogonal to the first. The transducer is made up of a plurality of assemblies each of which is composed of segments of piezoelectric material each held in a supporting slot in a length of metal plate which slot is filled with a material selected to provide impedance matching between the piezoelectric material and the transmission medium. The array of piezoelectric elements is made from the piezoelectric segments by making fine cuts therein perpendicular to the supporting slot to form a plurality of piezoelectric "islands" and each island is electrically connected to utilization circuitry. In a preferred embodiment, an ultrasonic cylindrical lens is affixed to the supporting structure along the supporting slot and intermediate the piezoelectric array and the compressional acoustic image field to broaden the angular sensitivity pattern in the direction to compensate for the disparity between length and width (greater length) of piezoelectric elements or islands.
